Is it strange they’re running Ruby 1.8? I would have thought 1.9 given that 2.0 is in the wild.

Yes, but I wouldn’t run Ruby on a shared server if you paid me to. If the server is set to chroot each user, then you have odd behavior in your ruby processes. If it isn’t, then you have a security nightmare. Use Digital Ocean for this, build your own private server with whatever ruby your heart and code desires.
