Adding a searchable directory/forums

I am very new to web design… a complete amateur. But I am all my organization has, so I’m trying to learn fast. Here’s our site so far (all done in FWE4):

Now we want to add a searchable directory, so that the public can find a doctor by zipcode. I found a possible solution at: www.ultimatelocator.com, but don’t know if it will work with my freeway site… any input would be greatly appreciated!

We’re also interested in adding member-only forums. Any ideas where to start?

Thanks,
Amy

This looks like a very nice setup, and certainly if you need the
support, the price will be worth it. I have posted some code on this
list in the past that does the zip-code lookup stuff. You can see an
example of it here:

http://pluto.walterdavisstudio.com/zip/

You will need to either purchase or find a Zip code database. The
data is available for free from the USPS, but it is often easier to
buy it from a vendor than try to get it for free from the boys and
girls in baby blue.

After that, all the math is done in one SQL query, which calculates
the length of an arc on the surface of the earth between the lat/long
centers of two Zip codes. The results are returned in rank order by
distance.

It’s less accurate at short distances than long, because someone
could be near one edge of a Zip code region, and the doctor might be
near the opposite edge of the adjacent ZIp code region, but it should
be close enough for your purposes.

If you search through the Web forum interface, you will find a thread
called ‘search with postal codes’ with more details.
