Airport connection failing - password failure

Just fitted an Airport card (thanks to all in my post btw) in my (old) iBook, and the connection is failing at the password stage. The password entered is correct and Windows laptops connect immediately. I’ve tried changing the password, same result.

Wireless connection method on the Seimens Router (Gigaset SE587) has just two options: WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK and WEP. The connection method was set to WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK which works with PC’s. I can connect the iBook only by turning off the security mode.

Anyone got any ideas?

My old iBook would only connect over WEP, and then only if I entered
the password in hexadecimal notation. Not sure if this was a
limitation of the then-current (Jaguar) operating system or something
deeper in the hardware. But you might need to roll back to WEP, and
unless you have an Apple-brand base station, enter your password as
‘9e 4f aa …’ jumble.

Actually, I have the same problem with my iMac and a client the same
with his MacBook.

Normally it’s no problem because I’m ‘wired in’, but if I try to
connect wirelessly or my client who visits tries, we fail at the
password stage even though I know everything is correct. As much as it
pains me to say it, 3 pc laptops connect fine, so I’ll be watching
this thread with great interest just to see if I’m doing something
really stupid!

Actually Trev, it doesn’t appear you’re doing anything stupid!

I’ve tried almost every setting & option under WEP and no change - password rejection every time.

Hi Kryten

I’ve got an iBook Clamshell with an original Airport card. Worked fine with a Netgear Router as long as I used it with WEP password. Upgraded to a new ‘Netgear MaxRange’ router with WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK and WEP.

Used the WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK connection and the poor old Clamshell is failing at the password stage. I think its the limitation of the Airport card. I hope I’m wrong.

Have a look for an original Apple Airport base station on eBay or
similar. Your wireless card can’t go any faster than that base station
anyway, so it won’t be a drag on anything. Plus, if you have other,
faster laptops around, you won’t drag them down to original 802.11b
speeds – they can use the newer faster base instead.

Interesting Gray Owl.

Thanks for that Walt. I think rather than ‘re-tune’ 3 PC’s, a network printer, a Switch and my trusty Mac to an Airport Base Station, and all the fannying about that is bound to follow, I’ll put up connecting my iBook using no password. I don’t think security for me is a problem as the nearest house/road is about 50 yards away. Or am I being naive?

Any more info about the area? My feeling is you’re probably fine. I
have an unlocked network at home - but my neighbor on one side is
over 80 and the neighbor on the other is a friend and has his own
network. The signal’s too weak to use on the other side of the road,
and behind us it doesn’t reach the end of the garden.

Ah but it’s the over 80’s you need to watch. They’ve got less to lose.
