I picked up an Airport Extreme and it’s working fine (at least my
wired Mac is), though with no wireless devices around who knows. In
any case I was looking at the options in Airport Utility and under
Airport > Base Station I see “Allow setup over WAN” which is disabled
by default. I read about it but am still a bit unclear. Can someone
explain what it does and why (or if) I should enable it?
You really don’t want this. It’s a big security hole, because it
exposes the setup side of things to any random stranger who can brute-
force your password. By restricting configuration to anyone who can
access your router by wire (your home network) you reduce the number
of possible avenues of attack.
