An OSXTiger question about Mail playing up.

I use to use Entourage up till 6 months ago until it started playing up. On advice from a few replies here, I moved across to Mail. Just lately on Mac startup and Mail is opened, when minimised to the dock, Mail does not work after that; just the spinning beach ball. Force quit Mail and re-opening does the trick; after that it’s fine.

So I was just curious as to why this should happen. Is it a Prefs delete thing?

Cheers!

You might try rebuilding your mail boxes. I’m not sure if there’s a way to rebuild them all at once or if you can only do them one by one.

Thanks Joe - no joy I’m afraid. When the Mail window is minimised and appears in the dock next to the Trash, clicking on it to bring it back does nothing. I have to click the app icon in the dock again, and then the window appears but clicking Get Mail does nothing.

That is odd. I’d poke around Apple’s support forums and see if you can find any similar issues. The issue could be in the Dock instead of Mail, something to consider.

Are you using Growl Mail? I was having the same issues with Mail and Googled it, finding that there was a problem with Growl Mail and Leopard. Once I turned off Growl Mail, I didn’t have the problem anymore. I like Growl Mail, but not if it is going to cause a problem.

Thanks Robin. I turned Growl off, restarted the Mac to replicate the problem and nothing has changed. As Joe suggests, maybe it’s the dock. But the problem only happens with Mail.

I can live with it though.

Cheers!

It looks like Joe is right. The same problem is now happening with Safari 3.1.1

I hate to say this, because I think often it is suggested when it’s not truly necessary, but you may need to reinstall your version of Mac OS X using Archive and Install.

Personally, I’d dig around a bit first to try to avoid that. See if running DiskWarrior helps, and try fixing permissions with Disk Utility. Maybe see if there is something you installed that could be the culprit and uninstalling it.

Well, anything’s worth trying rather than a re-install. I don’t have Disk Warrior, but I should have I suppose. With OS9, I was never without Nortons Utilities which saved my sanity a few times.

Thanks Joe. Keep you informed.
