Anchors opening in new windows

I’ve put a couple of anchors on my page, and on clicking the links, instead of jumping down the existing page to the intended spot, the links are opening the same page in a new window and then jumping down to the anchor. This has never happened to me. Any ideas what might be going on? Thanks!

How did you create your anchor links. Did you change Target to _blank in the Hyperlink Edit window (or in the page inspector)?

Post a link to your page so we can have a look.

Hi Dave

Thanks for the quick reply. I created the links by selecting the anchor text and hitting option-k. In the “internal” tab I selected the page to link to (in this case, it’s a newsletter, so there is only one page to choose), then selected the appropriate anchor from the Anchor popup menu.

I didn’t mess with Target. however the safari Inspector is showing “target=”_blank"". Unfortunately I don’t quite know what this means.

The page is here:

If you mean the Page inspector then delete _blank and it will revert to normal. Target _blank means that any link will open in a new window.

So this is what I see in your page

<a href="#english" style="color:#4a6889; text-decoration:none" target="_blank">English</a>

And this is where you should look if you haven’t selected it in the Edit Hyperlink window

I’ve checked, but the Target field in the Page Inspector is already blank, as is the Target field in the Hyperlink dialogue. Very odd. Where could this be coming from?

Hi Derek,
It looks like you are using the Create Email Action which will automatically open all links in a new window. The decision to do this was based on the use case where someone was reading an email in a web-based email application (Gmail or Yahoo for example) and clicking on a link would normally open the new page in the same browser window. Opening the link in a new window preserves the user’s email client.

I can see from your design that the links that you are having problems with are simple anchors to other parts of the email. I’ll log this as an issue against the Action and propose that we step over these links in the Action in the future.
Regards,
Tim.

For the record, Tim knocked out a solution for this and personally emailed it to me in under 30 minutes. Incredible.

Tim, your fix works perfectly. I’m still in the draft stage, and had forgotton that the Create Email action was in the mix. It makes perfect sense for most links to open in a new window in this case, and I really appreciate you creating an exception for anchors. Thanks!

There have been a couple of FW updates since my last post, and, though I’ve reinstalled Tim’s tweaked action, my anchors have gone back to opening in new tabs.

I’ve tried setting the target to _self, but the Create email action appears to override this. Any thoughts?

I have the same problem, is there a fix?

Hi Neil,
Below is the email I sent to Derek with the fix I implemented for him in December. You can download the modified version of the Action here;
http://www.freewayactions.com/test/create-email/create-email.zip

It appears to still work as expected although if you find otherwise please let me know.

I’ve been looking at this issue in the Create Email Action and have updated the code so that it should now step over your anchor tags in your document.

Start by locating your Freeway application icon and right-clicking on this and select Show Package Contents. In the window that opens drill down until you get to the following location;
Freeway 5.5 Pro.app/Contents/SharedSupport/Actions/ FAST/Create email.fwactionb
To install the Action you will need to locate and move the old version to a safe place on your computer (should we need it again in the future) and drop the attached version in it’s place.

Now when you switch back to Freeway you should notice in the Actions palette that the Create Email version number has changed to version 1.4.3. Preview your page again and you should notice that the links to anchors on the same page no longer open in a new window.

Thanks,
Tim.

Thanks for that Tim, I’ll download that shortly. In the meantime, I’d actually just changed the target for each link to _self - it appears to work okay but is that likely to affect something else that I’m not aware of?

Hi Neil,
It shouldn’t although the code may read as slightly verbose as ‘_self’ is the default value for links. Other than that I think you should be OK.

Tim.

Hi Tim

Please look here: http://thinktankcd.com/eshots/merit/july-2012/july-offer.html

I’ve used your revised action but if you click on either of the two red boxes near the top (which should link to anchors further down), I get a 403 error - what have I done wrong?

Sorry, forget the link above, the query still stands, but I’ve had to remove the links to enable the eshot to be sent.
