So, how difficult (if it’s even possible) is it to have a rollover that makes a sound when clicked and also has an animation?
I’d like to use it in a navigation menu.
Can this be done with standard FW Actions in some way? I was thinking of making the animation in Photoshop and exporting as Flash (or would it be better as a GIF).
If timing is critical to you (and for this application, I would say
it most certainly is, since the target size is so small) then Flash
is really the only way. There is a JavaScript sound effect in Freeway
5 – in the Attention FX Action – but it suffers from the problem
that the sound file must be fetched from the server at the moment you
roll over the target and before it can play, and this file can’t be
pre-fetched and cached for instant play. Flash doesn’t suffer from
this limitation, as the sound and the logic to play it are rolled up
in a single binary object.

Is Adobe Flash Pro the must have program for creating Flash content/
shockwave files, or are there other less expensive alternatives one
should consider?

I don’t know of another app that can make animations that include
synchronized sound. There are plenty of “banner generator” type
things out there; SWF and Slide would be one example of this breed.
