[ANN] Carousel turns One-Dot-Oh

Please define “doesn’t work”. The ActionsForge lists each action
separately, so that each one can have its own instructions, comments,
and version history. But all of the Carousel Actions are bundled in a
single file. If you download one, you get them all.

then all elements of Carousel action posted separately?

Which version of Carousel Tabs are you using? Have you gone through
the recommended steps to migrate from previous versions to the current
one?

They are:

  1. Go through your entire site, and remove all instances of Carousel
    anything.
  2. Publish once.
  3. Go back through and re-apply the Actions to build up the effect
    again.
  4. Publish again.

Walter, Transition FX does not appear to be a solution here. I have several graphics on the top page of one of my sites that I want to automatically shuffle through. Currently, I use Carousel to move through them, showing each for about 6 seconds. But in light of your recent post, I gave Transition FX a try, but there are problems.

You cannot use the “On Trigger” settings for Transition FX in this case because you can only choose from Click or Mouseover. Since I want the graphics to show automatically (similar to how Carousel does it), On Trigger won’t accomplish that. So the only useful settings are within On Page Load.

Using Transition FX’s “On Page Load” settings I can get my graphics to appear, but that’s it. And although I can get my first graphic to appear and then fade out after a specified duration, I cannot get the others to do the same. Moreover, how then do I loop through all the graphics again using Transition FX?

So you see, Transition FX is not a solution here.

Carousel works well enough. It just needs an option to cycle through the same graphics without that “rewind” part. You can see how I’ve got it setup on my beta site here:

Walter,

I have just added a second carousel to a page. Both carousel’s have a set of Tabs and auto-glide. Problem is, the second carousel body text is not visible. Tabs appear to be working. I am using the .active technique to highlight the tabs. Using new Tab version 0.7.3, Carousel 1.2.5 and Carousel Pane 0.3.3. Am I out of date on something?

Thanks for your help. Hope it’s something simple.

I don’t see anything wrong with the way the function is applied. Can
you try cutting just the carousel elements to another page, and test
that in isolation? You have a few other effects on the same page, and
there might be a conflict with one of them.

Also, you do have each of the base Carousel elements as stand-alone
layers, right?

Well, I don’t see anything at all on that page, just a beige box and a
red stripe with six boxes. There’s something else at play here.

Try starting over from a blank page in a new document, and draw each
element again. Publish, and make sure that all of the elements show on
the screen. Then go through and apply the Actions, and make sure they
get swallowed up and create the effect. This really does work, and you
can make as many different carousels on a page as your visitors’
browsers have memory to run them.

In the source, you can see there should be a carousel of items, MajorFinding1 - MajorFinding6, that appear in the beige box. The little red squares are the tabs.

I isolated further on http://www.invisionllc.com/caroulseltest2.html Took the caroulsel action off. All items set to layer and are visible.

Does this help? Thanks.

Is this made in the same site document as the others? If so, then it
won’t help you figure out what the conflict is. Start with a new
document, containing a single page, and build the effect up from
scratch there. Then publish it and see that it works. It would help to
have the other document closed while you do this, and that you not
copy and paste anything from one document to the other (unless it’s
text, and unless you paste without style). Freeway carries an amazing
amount of metadata in its clipboard, and it also caches Actions within
the documents that use them, and I’m thinking you’ve got some mixture
of Action versions or something else like that going on here.

Walter,

I figured out the problem. When I was building the html items, was asked if height should be undefined - I said - “yes.” Has to be “no.” I rebuilt them all is fine now. Good to know.

Walter,

Am having another carousel problem. Have a target show/hide layer on a page with a carousel. Now the carousel is broken - doesn’t move. This has been working fine. Do they not play well? I need a matrix of what doesn’t work with what… I can’t seem to keep track.

Thanks. Jan

This one took me quite some time to puzzle through as well. Love Carousel, but would still appreciate any kind of official step-by-step guide to minimize time in trial and error.

Please post a link to the failing page. I can better diagnose the issue if I can see the HTML and run it through Firebug. Carousel is supposed to play well with all Actions, and this is the first I have heard of there being any that it didn’t like.

Carousel is under “Out and About:”. Includes Photo and text block to the right. Tabs are squares to the left. Uses .action to highlight.

This carousel should auto glide horizontal, interval=12, duration=.4

Well, it appears as though the glider.js library isn’t being added to
this page. And it also appears as though the issue is with Softpress’s
Action and there’s not much I can do about that except to complain to
them. Which I will do. Can you cut down the document to a single page
(the failing page) and send it to me off-list?

Thanks,

Walter

I experience a strange behaviour when using the Carousel action; maybe you have an advise for me…

I updated a website with the new carousel action. The carousel used there worked well without any trouble using the previous version of this action.

However after updating it, always the next carousel frame is visible at the right, although dimensions of the main carousel frame and its panes are equal.

In addition, there appears some kind of “glow” around the entire carousel, but nothing has been set this way.

See a demo page at TOBIAS EICHNER IT + CONSULTING - Information Technology Is Our Universe ! .

Check to make sure that the Carousel and all of the Carousel Panes have exactly the same dimensions AND border settings. The Carousel (the element you place to indicate where the effect will appear) ends up becoming one of the panes, and the borders make up part of the overall dimensions of each box.

In order for the effect to appear correct, the outer “window” through which you view the “filmstrip” of panes must be precisely the same size as each one of the panes, including the borders. The outermost box does not end up with borders of its own.

One last thing. If you upgraded the Action in Freeway, but made the document with a previous version of the Action, you might want to remove all instances of the Action from your document, then publish once, then apply the Action again. There were significant changes in the last go-around of updates, and there have been a lot of transition pains that this little remove-and-reapply dance works around.

@waltd: Thanks for your reply.

The panes have exactly the same size, because they are clones from the original one.

I found the reason for the trouble: It’s the padding of each pane set to two pixels. Removing the padding, anything works, no glow, no size failures.

However the padding was set before already and in fact, the layout needs it, so I can’t remove simply remove it.

Is there a way to workaround this while keeping the padding ?

For your reference, please find the demo project here:

It contains two pages, one with padding applied to the panes, one without. One works, one doesn’t.

Sorry to be so persistent… is there an other solution than removing the padding of each pane ?

As mentioned before, the previous version worked well there, so maybe it’s a bug or maybe the new behaviour of the action is intended that way. Not sure.

Tobias.
