Hi Guys,

I am new to all this…

I have signed up out of interest. Could you give me a bit of detail as to what you are doing??

Sorry if this sounds stupid.

Kind regards

Sure. Inlay is a Content Management System (CMS), similar to WebYep or other “through the web” editing systems, that allows you to combine a static template (the page layout) with dynamic content stored in a database. Unlike any other CMS I know of, Inlay does this trick in a new way. All your site’s URLs are apparently static – plain HTML pages for all intents and purposes.

When a visitor requests a page that you have marked up to use Inlay, they will enter the normal URL for that page, say http://example.com/products/widgets.html. The server intercepts that request, and passes it through a tiny and very fast PHP script, which analyzes the content of that page for special markup, and if it finds any, interpolates the markup with the data you have entered previously in the editing interface, and serves the result back to the user without altering the URL in any way.

The other thing you can do is have completely “virtual” pages – they don’t actually exist at the URL where they are requested. So again, let’s go into the products folder of our imaginary site, and in Freeway, we make a template page called product.html, marked up with some Inlay fields for dynamic content. After uploading, and signing in to the Inlay system, we visit a URL that we know does not exist at all: http://example.com/products/oven-mitts.html. Since we’re signed in as an editor, up pops a form asking us to choose a template for this “virtual” page, and we choose product.html. The editing interface appears, where you can click on an editable area to edit it directly. Add the oven mitt-related content, and click back to the normal view, and the page now exists. You could make another one for salsa, if that’s another one of your company’s products.

Everything I’ve described so far is working now, but I’m working on two other features that I feel are part of the “minimum viable product” – in-page loops and partial templates (for lists of things that are managed separately), and virtual page listings (menus and navigation to the fake pages).

I’m really looking forward to this Walter - something I can’t say about
CMS’s in general.

Excitement!

I know there are literally hundreds of different CMS out there but what I suspect with Walter’s is that this will be a Freewaycentric product with all the advantages that will give FW users.

While I am sure that the system will also work with templates made with any number of methods this might give FW users an edge.

For you Todd, as a man who has largely moved beyond FW, the advantage may not be there.

I, like Ernie, am equally excited about Inlay and feel that this is something I could really get my teeth into.

I wouldn’t say that. Inlay isn’t FW only so I do have an interest.

Besides, my comment was only meant as some friendly prodding towards Ernie, nothing more.

Inlay isn’t FW only

I didn’t say it was. I simply said that there may be a slight edge for FW users.

I totally understand Ernie’s reticence to dive into any CMS - it takes so much effort to discover their intricacies only to find that the one you are looking it is not best suited to the project in hand.

Todd is rightly prodding me, because even though my css kung-fu is strong,
I’m way behind when it comes to the inter-breeding of databases and page
code. :stuck_out_tongue:

You are not alone in that Ernie - every day the more you learn the more you realise you still have to learn.

There just isn’t enough time to waste exploring all the options. A leg up, like Inlay appears to offer, can potentially give us a bit more time to spend elsewhere.

I rather like that feeling … need it, even. As someone who’s easily bored I find that it keeps things interesting and therefore I stay motivated.

It’s simple to apply in Freeway, the same way it is simple to apply a Disqus blog or to place a bunch of Flickr photos on your page – because there are Actions in Freeway, and repetitive stuff like this can be automated away. If you are hand-coding this, you have to add two data- attributes to your HTML element to make it editable, so this:

<div id="item42"><p class="foo">Here is some placeholder text.</p></div>

becomes

<div id="item42" data-inlay-source="body_copy" data-inlay-format="markdown">
	<p class="foo">Here is some placeholder text.</p>
</div>

Literally, that’s the extent of the modification needed to turn any HTML page into an Inlay template.

I’m really hoping it will be expandable with like some kinda store/ module/ actions system that we can purchase… For instance, client edible sliders…, client editable forms, client editable news feeds, etc etc! I would pay lots for all this… Please!
