Give this a try on your image-heavy pages. What it does is silently replace all of the off-screen (below the fold) images on the page with the _clear.gif image, and then load those images only when they scroll into view. There’s an option to add a “spinner” to the off-screen images, so that if they take a while to load, the visitor knows that something is happening. Note that this will not work well with semi-transparent images, because the loading animation will continue to show through after the image has loaded.
