[ANN][VID] Box-Model Site Overview

Following up from this thread found here:

http://freewaytalk.net/thread/view/36375

(Sorry for the delay people. A huge site update landed in my lap and I’ve been working trying to get that updated to Freeway 5 and adding some features that I didn’t know how to do.)

I saw in the other Freewaytalk thread that people were looking for a video to show how to create a CSS based layout or what one would look like showing a hierarchy of items found in the site panel. So, I took it upon myself to do that and in roughly 8 minutes you can see my screen-cast of a box-model style site built with Freeway 5 Pro using a template I will be releasing soon. (I’d assume you’d also be able to do the same kind of things in the screen-cast in Freeway 4 so it’s not Freeway 5 specific.)

I’d encourage everyone, regardless how much of an explanation (sometimes vague) is in the video, to focus on the palettes and read the tips I’ve put on my Blogspot about how things were accomplished.

Also any feedback would be great. I know the audio portion of the video isn’t quite Paul caliber, but I started doing these for fun and I’m on my third one so it should be getting better, hopefully.

(If there’s other screen-cast’s you’d like to see that aren’t already in “Freeway Moments” then let me know and I’ll get working on them.)

Enjoy

Hi Dan/Mitchell - do you have schizophrenia?

Only kidding - had a look at the screencast and I think you have done a great job for the guys out there that have been wary of setting up a CSS positioned page.

I am sure that there will be plenty of takers when the template is ready.

Keep up the good work!

David

Thanks, Dave.

I don’t suffer from schizophrenia, I’d say I suffer from a lack of experience doing recorded video and audio. There’s a lot that goes into it all and there’s so many areas that I feel you have to cover for the often huge gap in between new and current users.

It can only get better as I get more comfortable doing them.

Mitchell/Dan, superb and very informative. I spent about 4 hours
yesterday trying all ways and following various threads and info on
how to do something very similar - and failed miserably!

I’ll give it another go as the day progresses following your
instructional, but could I ask one question?

As all of the inserted boxes are HTML, doe this mean that every
picture has to be to the right size and proportions as they’re
basically pass-through?

Well done Mr Two Names!

Hi Dan,

Very good tutorial, perhaps, it needs the actual process of inserting and floating divs a bit more clearly. I think that would help everybody.

We been building most sites this way for a while, just note, we’ve found that IE6 does not like the margin below, we try and use padding below or margin above.

Upon David’s suggestion:

Here’s another screen-cast which shows the actual process of inserting the box within a box within a box including references to the video posted yesterday. It discusses the uses of HTML items and it explains a run through of the “code” to see if you’re doing things properly.

It runs for about 10 minutes and includes the file I worked on during the screen cast for you to see what I did.

I’m working on correcting some video jumps and weird screen jumps, perhaps it’s the video card. I’ll figure it out.

Files can be found under the “Update” in my blogspot post with the new mediafire link included.

Enjoy!
