Auto URL name

I’m working on a recipe site with hundreds of recipes - one page for each stylized recipe card. Every recipe card (page) uses a code number (e.g., “d37”).

When I create pages I use the code for the URL (e.g., “d37.html”). This way, I can create multiple pages in one shot, giving it the name of d (for example) and Freeway fills in the numbers.

But then, when I paste the recipe name into the page title, Freeway wipes the code name from the URL and replaces it with a chopped-off version of the page title.

How do I stop this from happening? (When you have some 250 recipes to deal with, this is a serious problem.)

File>Document setup and then look under the Output Tab

Down near the bottom you have an option to set Max Filename length.

You have to remember that FW will automatically set the url (file name) from what you have put in as the page Title. To avoid this set the file name first ie d37.html and use the Enter key to make it stick before adding the Title.

If you have too long a title then FW will truncate the file name to however many characters you have set in Max Filename length

In order to stop the filename from changing, you have to work in the opposite direction. Make the title what you want it to read (for humans) then change the filename to what your URL scheme requires. Once you manually set the filename to anything besides what Freeway auto-suggests, the link between the Title and Filename is broken, and it won’t go back to changing based on the title.

Not so in my case. That is one of the first things I’ve tried. But I did figure out something weird:

If I paste in the title and enter / return (I’ve tried both), the URL changes to the chopped-off page name. If I paste it in, click to the right of the URL and hit enter or return I get the same result. If I click somewhere in the center of the URL and hit enter or return it works. It is weird but it works consistently.

I spent years as a compensated beta tester for a number of companies (Quark and others) and am pretty good with approaching things from absolutely every angle imagineable. I suspect that when creating a new page things may work differently between a manually entered name and an automatically generated name.

It should be noted that this is an unusual site because of the huge page count. Creating a bunch of pages in one step with automatically numbered URLs saves a ton of time. Greatly reducing page count via DB integration would be great but this is not FW’s strong suit.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

The automatic link between title and filename is broken the moment you edit the filename in any manner after Freeway has created it. It’s odd that clicking into the middle of the name would do this, but you never can tell what will trigger a “save”, I guess.

If this site is a going concern (you are making money from it) you may want to investigate a CMS or hiring a programmer to do that for you – you are absolutely correct that this sort of thing is madness in a hand-edited site.
