Backdraft is Now Free

No, you don’t need to retake that class on reading comprehension, Backdraft has indeed been released for free! You can go and download Backdraft right now at http://getbackdraft.com.

Obviously, a lot has changed on the business end of Backdraft for this to be. The blunt truth is that I no longer have the time to offer the high-quality support that Backdraft has become known for. There have been a lot of changes in my personal life this spring that have taken me away from my work, and Backdraft users have begun to suffer for it as I’ve been offline for many days at a time. I can’t in good conscience continue to charge for a product that I can’t offer prompt support for, so it’s now being released for free.

However, the future for Backdraft is very bright. I have v2.1 in the works and am actively looking for suggestions for the next big feature release! In fact, I should be able to spend much more time on the actual development and documentation now.

Very few free products last more than a year when there is no financial support – it’s difficult to dedicate time to a project that has no ROI. When Backdraft 2.0 released and I sent out the free update emails, I had a small army of customers asking me to please charge for the next release (thank you, you all made my day), and some just sent me money voluntarily (I take my hat off to you). Hence, I’ve now added a page to the website where you can contribute some spare change to the development of Backdraft: getbackdraft.com/contribute.

Also, I’m now offering “premium support” so Backdraft users aren’t left out in the cold. You can find more details on this here.

If you already own Backdraft, then this announcement shouldn’t change anything. You will continue to have your three months of complimentary support until it’s all used up. However, if you purchased Backdraft in the last month or so, and would rather get a refund than keep the remainder of your free support, just email me and I’ll get your money sent back.

As always, thanks to everyone who has been involved and helped with the creation of Backdraft through the years! This is a great adventure and I’ve been blown away by the level of support that the community has for it.

Go forth, and make the web responsive!

I thought that even at £40 it was a fantastic product to produce responsive websites for the no-code lovers amongst us. I found it much easier to implement than the integrated Freeway breakpoints system. Now it is free, it should be an essential part of Freeway. I wish you all the best and hope that you continue to update Backdraft - I would happily pay for any substantial updates.

Thank you.

I didn’t buy Backdraft because I came to responsive with FW7 … although I should say that I was on the point of abandoning Freeway, after many many years, when the FW7 was announced and chose to wait for the release and have been pleased with the release.

However, I applaud you for your generous, community minded approach. If only our bankers and politicians could behave in such a way. Well done!

Backdraft helped me greatly in learning Freeway and building my very simple website.

Thanks Caleb!
