Backing up a hard drive

Hi folks,

I’m using an iMac G5 and need to back-up the hard drive. I bought a Western Digital ‘Home’ external drive and downloaded Carbon Copy Cloner. I’m using a firewire cable.

When I start the cloning process all seems fine but after an hour or so the iMac hard drive seems to be working too hard and possibly over-heating. Any suggestions or are my fears unjustified?

Thanks,
Jim

It can take a while the first time. Any reason you think it may be overheating?

Yes, the fan noise increases greatly.

At least I assume it’s the fan- it’s a loud wooshing noise.

It is possible that it is getting hotter hence the increase in noise but I don’t think you particularly need to worry about it and as Joe points out once it has done it once it is less taxing when running the next time.

Personally I use SuperDuper (and Retrospect) to my WD external.

Sometimes these iMacs get pretty loud when the processor is working for a bit at full tilt. They’ll also do that when the computer hangs to protect it from overheating. So it may not be the heat of the drive at all. It’s hard to say without more diagnostic info.
