Baseline grids in FW is difficult

Hi

I want to create a baseline grid for my text and items to align to.

My body text (and other text styles) use a leading of 24px. I’ve created a horizontal grid of 24px on my page. So you would think that it would be an easy matter of aligning my text to the grid, but…

in FW ‘page’ mode, text is always aligned to the top of the HTML item, regardless of the leading. Try it: draw an item, give it a border and fill it with text with a massive leading of 50px. In page mode the text virtually touches the top of the item, but when previewed the text is moved down (an amount that I can’t understand - it’s not sitting on a 50px baseline from the top of the item).

Because FW doesn’t present the position of the text in page mode as it will look when previewed, it is very very difficult to use a baseline grid.

What’s going on and can this be resolved?

Mark

Would using padding on the text item help lower the top line?

Yes but then when seen live the text is moved down the padding plus the leading. So it doesn’t solve it.

I’ve found the only way to align text and images exactly is using a table.

Not sure if this helps, but make sure your Space Afters (and Space Befores, if needed) are 0. They are “default” by default!

FW in the design ‘page’ mode isn’t showing what the text will look like when previewed - hence it isn’t (in this particular case) a What You See Is What You Get web design software.

I’m surprised it can’t show this. It can’t be that difficult can it?

No two browsers agree on this, either. Freeway tries to strike a middle-ground here, and give you an average view. But remember, it’s not HTML until you publish. While you’re in the internal design view, you’re looking at an approximation of the final output only. HTML (unlike print) does not render the same on any two different devices / platforms / browsers. Freeway gets very close to the grail of cross-platform design, but it can only take you so far.
