Benefits of CMS?

I agree with Todd.

It’s always more difficult, and more work, to start static and go dynamic. When it comes to working with static content there is a lot of manual work and multiple pages while dynamic, or CMS or database driven content, typically uses a single or two templates and more or less requires any administrator to just ‘fill in the blanks.’ I know on my web site, I use ExpressionEngine 2 to run everything and when I choose to create a new ScreenCast or Template, I essentially just have to fill in some blanks I have set up with information and then I can easily access or add that new entry to the store pages.

By using a CMS you are doing something that is essential for running a store and that is standardization. Keeps things simple yet appear informative. ExpressionEngine might be a bit over the top for your store and Julie has suggested a cart system she uses. I know a some people who use CubeCart and that works plus its available on most hosting providers. At least on mine it is.

I sell an ebook online from a simple sales page created in Freeway and the shopping trolley is provided by http://www.e-junkie.com/ who handle the delivery side and allows you to interface with various billing options, though PayPal is probably the easiest. It’s worth looking at and can cost as little as $5 per month plus it can be used for shipping of physical products as well, such as clothing for example, though obviously you would be responsible for organising how goods are delivered.

On the question of a CMS if you are planning on having hundreds of items in your shop with regular updates I think this is the right way forward. It will just enable you to work in a more automated and standardised system.
