Big Sur compatibility

Affintiy designer has a nice modern interface but does not have the ability to draw to scale or do measurements or dimensioning. It’s strictly for drawing for graphic design, not drafting.

I really hope that Intaglio is not dead, it’s a great program!

I am one of those who, regrettably, have to plan a migration from Intaglio towards a Big-Sur-compatible alternative. I am looking into Affinity, here is a brief list of things I had to learn in the change from Intaglio → Affinity:

• duplicate: cmd-D —> cmd-J
• line tool —> choose the pen tool and select the line mode
• Apple color picker can be found in the View menu
• cmd-arrow —> shift-arrow (displacement distance can be set in the tools section of the preferences)
• to rescale by a certain percentage, say 150%: replace input field in the transform panel by 150%
• there is no arc tool
• there is no “select similar” functionality

Intaglio appears to be back! I’ve updated to MacOS 11.1 and have no problem opening the program, old files, new documents, using tools, etc. I haven’t conducted an exhaustive test, but so far so good. I’m using a 2016 15" MacBook Pro. I had purchased XDesign as an alternative. It had a few advantages over Intaglio, but also some glaring omissions. So glad I can stick with my trusty friend for a while longer.

I’m running Big Sur 11.0.1 and can use Intaglio 3.9.5 almost without problem.

I have some maps with large page sizes (eg 1500mm x 1200mm). When I open these documents I lose my page size and just get US Letter. I can reset this as a custom page size but, after a save and reopen, I’m back to US Letter.

Wonderful app. I like it so much, I’d pay money to see it receive ongoing maintenance.

Mike

Perhaps we are all worrying too much. Intaglio is a 64-bit application and should work well with Big Sur, so Clark’s experience should not come as a surprise. It is a concern that Nick appears to have abandoned his “baby”, and its good to look for alternates, but for now I’m happy to learn that Clark had a good experience. I really don’t want to learn to use another drawing program when Intaglio ideally fits my needs.

That’s great news for Clark but it’s still not working for me. I’m running 11.1 on a 2015 MacBook Pro.

I’m running Big Sur 11.1 and Intaglio 3.9.5a.

Whenever I open an Intaglio document, either from in the app or by double-clicking a file, no window appears.

File: New doesn’t do anything either.

So there are definitely problems with this combo.

Hmm, I really hope this is the beginning of a solution, but here Intaglio 3.9.5 on MacOS 11.1 launches but then does not open either a new file or an old file…

Ha, just after I posted this negative result, I clicked around a bit more, opened a “new workspace”, and somehow now it works, windows open, new and old. I’m unsure how this happened, but it is great news in these dark days!!!

Sorry to hear not everyone is having the same luck as me. I’m running version 3.9.5 of Intaglio. It shows on my disk as taking 18,820,943 bytes and a “Modified” date of Oct 17, 2017, don’t know if that means anything vis-a-vis revisions. I’ve used it a good bit more since I first posted and everything I try works. Happy to help others to get the same results, but there’s not much more I can think of. Sorry if I’m stating the obvious, but in a similar situation I would try disabling all system extensions, restarting, and try running Intaglio as the only open application. That’s not what I’m doing, but it might uncover the problem.

I tried it on a second computer, which I had not yet upgraded: installed MacOS 11.1 , held my breath and … yes, Intaglio opens as it should. What a relief…

Thanks Carlo. What is a “new workspace?” Is that something I access from the Finder, or from within Intaglio once the app is open?

In Intaglio go: Window : Workspace : New workspace…

I have tried this and I still doesn’t work for me.

one more update: I had the opportunity to check out whether Intaglio would run on a computer that had no yet upgraded to MacOS 11.1, but was still running the first Big Sur version 11.0.1. Intaglio did not open any window initially, but after doing the “new workspace” magic, an Intaglio window opens and also existing Intaglio documents open.

I opened a New Workspace and name it “Big Sur.” Didn’t work. BUT after a relaunch of Intaglio, all seems to work.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am liking EazyDraw, but it’s more complicated and costs a bit. But much more drafting capability.

another trick (alternative to this “new workspace” thing), mentioned on the Apple Support Forum:

Click on Intaglio application and “get info”.
Click on “Open in Low Resolution”
Open Intaglio: it works!
Close intaglio and untick “Open in Low Resolution”
After this, Intaglio opens normally, recognises all previous documents and works as expected.

For me, getting Intaglio to work under Big Sur seemed to involve choosing the “Floating Windows” option under Window > Workspace. I think that is what did it…

I am sorry to see Intaglio not being updated. I just planned and managed my house remodel with it, it did a great job, many many scale drawings.

I am heartened some by the reappearance of an old piece of software I used more than a decade ago, Canvas. Canvas for Mac had died for some time, but now it is back. Canvas X Draw. $99/yr. I’ve just started playing with a trial. So far so good: it opened a 2008 Canvas file fully intact.

Thanks! I can now transfer all my stuff over to Affinity Designer.
