Yes, in a markup item. Or, depending on your layout, in an instance of the Crowbar Action (which will eliminate any surrounding P tags so you get valid code).

Try this first: Page / Insert / Markup Item. A dialog will open; paste in the first blob of Disqus code and okay the dialog.

Now locate the 100px square box on your page (center, probably) with the little [< H >] in it, select it, drag it out to be the size of your comments area (just the width, let the height spill out of the box) and position it so there is nothing beneath it that will get stepped on by the comments when they grow vertically.

You don’t need to do the comment counts part of the code (the part they say to put right before /body) unless you also want to go through the heartache of manually managing your links. Please don’t.

Walt that worked wonderfully!

the only thing I did not do is link to page - I could not find that action…

It’s a built in Action (so there’s no “finding” required). You can
apply it to an image to make a button, or you can insert it as an
inline (text) Action to make a text link.

Very simple. Build a site that looks like a blog. Think long and hard about how you want to structure this, because it will rapidly become hard to change without breaking links. Basically, I would make a set of folders right off the bat so you have your archive structure all set:

site
   2010
       may
       june
       july
   about_this_site.html
   index.html

Now when you want to make a new post, create a new page in the appropriate folder. Type madly and truly. Add pictures and other stuff like that. Give your page a meaningful filename, maybe including the date of the post.

If you want to get fancy, add the Link to Page Action to the page, because that will magically create links (previous/next) to the other pages in the same folder. (Note that it will also cause every page to which it is applied to re-publish EVERY TIME.)

On your home page, Add a snippet – the first paragraph of your new post – linking to the full post page.

Okay, so that’s the HTML part of it. It’s just a site, so it works the way normal sites do.

For the comments, go to http://disqus.com and sign up for an account. You will need to give the complete URL of your site, so it’s best if you do this step after you’ve configured and uploaded your site on a public server.

Go to the Installation instructions (in the Tools tab), and look at the Universal instructions. This is a little bit of JavaScript that you copy and paste into a Markup Item on your page where you want the comments area to appear. Each site you register will have a different code number, so each one can be configured (on the Disqus control panel) to appear differently and to have different features.

Upload again, and your comments section should appear on your page. There are additional things you can do, like a sweet little hack that adds the comment count to each link on your home page, but that requires manual linking, which makes this doubly hard to do on a day-to-day basis. This is crying out for an Action, I think. Perhaps Tim has a moment… I wish I did.

Select a graphic item (or a run of text) Item>Actions>Link to Page -probably about half way down your action list.

All I see is a link to window.

I selected my background tan graphic and looked -
also tried grabbing some words in the “blog” post.
I still do not see it.

Try inserting a text cursor where you want the link to go, then choose Insert / Link to Page from the main menu. You can’t apply Actions to text (sadly).

Previous and next are good. If the action can grab the title of the next or previous page and use that instead, that would be even more “blog-like”.

You can use the Softpress RSS Action (might be built in, might not be,
check at the Forge) to provide a “feed” of your home page, which will
change as often as there is new content added (under this scheme).
Whenever you add something new, RSS readers will see the update.

Great - now if I am adding the blog as new “pages” so that there is an archive as we discussed- will it still work - or do I need to add text to the same HTML box - and do the headers as accordions so that the txt does not overflow -

If you look at some other blogs, I think you’ll see what I’m talking
about here:

Home page:

###Latest Story Headline

Latest story teaser blurb, first two or three paragraphs and a read
more… link. Also link the headline the same way. The read more and
headline link to the full story which is in the Archive.

It’s optional to also have additional iterations of this format, where
the most recent N stories in the blog are represented below the
latest. After a while, you simply prune these off the bottom of the
page, and update your archive’s index page so the links aren’t
completely orphaned.

So if you build your feed from that HTML box – the one with the
teasers in it – you will automatically get a useful RSS feed that
trips your readers’ wires with the latest posts.

Just as an aside, The quickest way I’ve found to put in a simple blog and comment system in Freeway is using PulseCMS

Example: http://www.printlineadvertising.co.uk/blog/

This took less that 15mins to download and install the one line of code in Freeway this afternoon. A few Freeway styles later the blog is up and running inside you Freeway styled page.

This was a breath of fresh air compared to wrestling with WordPress on a number of occasions before now.

ok - I saw that what happens is that by putting the rss feed on the page it blocks people from seeing the page before subscribing.

is there a way of putting a rss feed “button” next to instead of blocking the page?
