Can't Open New FWPro Update

Hi, gang. I just downloaded the new Freeway Pro update and have dropped the little icon into my Applications folder. When I try to open it, it says I can’t because I have to “run it the first time from an Administrator account to enter your serial number.”

Does anyone know how to access my Administrator account? I’m running OSX 10.5.5.

I’ve gone into system preferences and opened up my “accounts” section, but there’s nothing that says, “open up from here” or anything.

Ugh.

Why does it seem as though Softpress makes updating the software difficult like this? I seem to remember something like this happens just about every time I update.

Thanks,
Jamie

Sound like you’re not logged into an Administrator account on your
Mac. Are you logged into the account you first created when you first
got your Mac? Or have your created other accounts since then?

User accounts may be set up with admin rights.
Obviously your User account isnt.
The User that was set up with the Mac has to be admin - so you can log into
that.
See the Account pane in System Preferences.

This isn’t directly related to SP but to your running on a non admin enabled
User account.

I find it a chore to have to enter my reg details for every little
incremental update. But its not that big a deal except I have to do it all
on Desktop and Powerbook. I guess SP cant afford to leak any more than they
can help and this cuts off the ‘shared copies’ from updating doesn’t it.

hope this helps

When you install Mac OS X on your computer, the very first account you
make in the setup process is the Administrator account (by default).
If you create another account (and you would need to be logged in as
that admin user to do this) then you have the option to allow admin
privileges for that new user by checking the “User may administer this
computer” checkbox in the New User panel.

If you are logged in as a non-admin user, then you will need to
authenticate any move that changes a part of your computer owned by
the “system”. The Applications folder is just one such folder. When
Freeway accepts your serial number, it modifies the Freeway
application itself, marking it as a “full” copy and removing any time-
bomb restrictions. In order to do this, which amounts to opening and
then saving the Freeway application bundle as a file, Freeway needs to
have permission to modify the Applications folder.

If you are logged in as an admin user (or even the only user) of your
computer and you still get this warning message, then the first thing
you should do is open /Applications/ Utilities/ Disk Utility and run
Repair Permissions. This will probably result in a large list of
things that needed to be changed. If this doesn’t work, then locate
the DVD or CD-ROM that your latest version of Mac OS X came on, start
up from that disk, and run the Disk Utility from there to do the same
thing. This should clear up any difficulties such as you describe.

Finally, this is nothing to do with Softpress, but with the Mac OS X
security system. It’s actually for your own good, even when it causes
you pain because it gets screwed up. It could be much worse – it
could be Windows – and then you could be running your own Russian
porn server.

You can also get issues running software installed in other other
Admin user accounts that share libraries etc created by the main admin
user etc. (had issues myself with that)

Hey, Gang –

Thanks for your feedback. Problem solved.

Wouldn’t it be smart if Softpress included a WRITTEN description on the application pop-up box that shows up when you open up the upgrade? Instead, some clever graphic designer decided to try to communicate that message with a graphic only. The result is that I’ve blown 2 hours of my day trying to figure this out just because someone couldn’t write a short description in addition to drawing a clever picture.

Thanks for taking time out of your day to help me with this. Sorry for the gripe, but I’ve just blown 2 hours because someone wasn’t user-friendly enough to write a one-sentence instruction.

Sincerely,
Jamie

Hi Jamie,

The main problem with written instructions is that only people that
speak/read that language can decipher them, which in turn makes it
pretty user unfriendly.

What is it that you got stuck on? If we can make things easier
(preferably graphically but we can also write something too) then we
would love to.
