Can't see effect

A real tyro question! I’m wanting to apply effects - specifically I want to blur the edges of an oval containing an image texture. But all that happens when I select any effect is that the object to which I’m trying to apply it ‘disappears’, leaving only its handles. As soon as I delete [-] the effect, the unchanged re-appears.

I’m looking forward to that ‘D’oh’ moment…

Regards
JB

Right now I have no idea how you applied the image to the oval.
Maybe try this one as it works here:
Duplicate the oval shape and place it on top of the raw image. Group it and make it a “standard mask” under “Group:”
Then add the effect to the first oval.
Just my 2¢.

Cheers

In the ‘Fill’ palette, is the ‘Standard’ button selected? If the ‘None’ button is selected, the image won’t show.

Thank you, Frank & IanB. I think maybe I’m asking too much of a Mac mini…

My experience is that when I apply and Exterior Glow effect to a white circle on a black rectangle background and I move the ‘Expand’ slider to more than ~8, the circle disappears. And similarly with the Opacity slider as I reduce the value <~70%.

Once the circle has disappeared, sometimes it will not reappear when I restore the ‘visible’ settings.

And if I fill the circle using an ‘Image texture’, then the ‘Glow only’ shows fine, but if I disable the ‘Glow only’ option, it disappears.

And most surprisingly, once I’ve used an Image texture fill in an object, I can’t find a way to change the fill to a colour or gradient fill. I have to redraw the object!

I guess what I’ve not yet found is a tutorial to help me understand what should happen when I apply effects. Then I could know how much of my problem is the result of my inexperience and how much is the way this amazing program expects me to work.

Unless I´m lost in translation I´d say all is working as expected.

Maybe send the file over and I will look into it.

It’s not clear what you’re doing, but here’s one way of creating this effect:

  1. Draw a circle.
  2. Import an image.
  3. Position the circle on top of the image.
  4. Select both items and Group (Command-G).
  5. In the Group palette, select ‘Standard’. The image appears inside the circle (B).
  6. Select Effects>Standard>Interior Glow. Click the Color well and choose White in the Color palette (C).
  7. To achieve a more glowing effect, add the Exterior Glow to the chain Standard>Exterior Glow (D).

Other effects are possible. The grey glow (E) was created with the Exterior Glow effect.

Hi IanB and thank you! I wish I could determine what someone is trying to do as clearly as you did.

I tried your suggestion. It ‘sort of’ worked to start with but the ‘fade’ was real narrow so I tried to adjust the width. That screwed it all up and now I can’t get the effect at all. Even with drawing a new circle (well, oval!) and reimporting the jpeg image.

I know I just have to keep working at it without keep bugging you - but if I may just try for a little more info? What properties should the front item (the mask?) have? Should it be solid colour filled, white? And should it have a stroke, white, to the perimeter? Or am I completely missing the point?

Again - a million thanks.

Same steps as I used and described already.
So taking back the effect causing an issue leads to the question if it´s maybe your system specs.

No problem, John.

The basic rules:

• The object (the oval or circle) should have a ‘Standard’ Fill.

• The fill and stroke can be any colour and opacity.

• To mask an image, place the object on top of the picture, select both items and Group them (Object>Group).
Go to the Group palette and click the ‘Standard’ button.

That’s it! The image will appear inside the oval or circle.

• You might find it helpful if the Fill, Stroke and Group palettes are permanently on screen.

• Take your time and practice. Repeat the procedure with a different shape and image.
