Carousel

I installed a couple of actions earlier and for some reason now none
of the carousels on my site work… so I though I would remove those
actions and go for the later versions(1.1), but the link to Walters
site for a demo and hopefully tutorial on how to apply the action
doesn’t work - I’m supposed to go live tonight with the site - can
anybody offer a tutorial URL for the latest carousel version
pllleeeaassseee?

Try again, I just realized that the 10.5.7 update on my server nuked
the Web service, it’s running again now. The original instructions are
no longer current, though, so you need to go here:

Hi Walter, I downloaded version 1.1. When I apply the Carousel Pane
action to the first item the menu in the actions pallet doesn’t have a
checkbox as per the instructions?

Read the second set of instructions. The Action has been simplified
even further. You place your first pane where you want the effect to
appear on the screen, and instead of applying Carousel Pane to it, you
apply Carousel to it. Carousel gets all the settings for speed, auto-
scroll, etc.

Every other pane you create (anywhere on the page or pasteboard) gets
Carousel Pane applied to it. And when you publish, each one finds the
other and away you go.

Could my fellow listers share some examples of Carousel in action? I’d
like to experiment with incorporating it into my website. What are the
limitations in the kind of content that can be used inside Carousel?

It generally works well with photos, HTML, and other non-plug-in
content. QuickTime movies and Flash tend to “bleed” out of the
container, but there are tricks you can use to work around some of this.

Carousel uses Prototype and Scriptaculous, which means you cannot use
it on the same page as any jQuery or MooTools script content.

One other point you need to realize is that if you put 40 pictures
inside the carousel, they all have to download before the page will
work. And the page will “weigh” many megabytes, too. It’s a very good
idea to turn on Show File Sizes in the Site Pane in Freeway, and keep
an eye on the total page size after each publish or preview. About
200K of this size will be the Prototype/Scriptaculous stuff, but that
tends to be cached by the browser so it’s not a serious issue except
the very first time someone visits your page. But the rest of the file
size you do have control over, and should watch carefully.
