Changing domain names

I need to change domain names for my website. I’ve already registered the domain name. I’ve already contacted the webhosting service to tell them what I’m doing. (I have to use the same webhosting service for now because I had just renewed my webhosting prior to the domain registration fiasco.)

I want the very same content to go to the new domain. How do I edit my current file so that it applies to this new domain? I could not find this in Help in Freeway Pro (3.15).

Thanks,
Claire

Claire:

You’d need to change the upload information in your FW Preferences -
and then upload the site to the new domain’s space.

Where do I find all of these things to change?
My webhost gave me information for the following categories:

  • Domain
  • Ip
  • UserName
  • PassWord
  • NameServer1
  • NameServer2

In Freeway Pro 3.15, I went to File > Document Setup, then changed:

  • Server (this was old domain, so I put in new domain)
  • User name
  • Password
based on the information they gave me, but it does not upload. It
tries (for 1:19 min.) then says, “Cannot connect because the FTP
    server is not responding.”

I do not know where to put the other info:

  • Ip
  • NameServer1
  • NameServer2

From past experience, I know that my webhost doesn’t know anything
about Freeway.

Thanks,
Claire

Claire:

The IP and the nameservers have nothing to do with Freeway. If the
username and password they gave you - do not give you root access,
then you need to create or have them create an FTP account that
allows you to upload your files. You also need to set the directory
to upload the files onto the server. You’d have to check with the
server to determine the naming convention they use for the folder
that holds all the files that are publicly available. On my server,
the Freeway directory would be set to: /public_html/

Also, if the domain hasn’t had the nameservers set at the Registrar,
then that would also account for the inability to perform the upload.

All you need is your new domain mapped to the existing domain (and make the new one the primary domain), and therefore as still you’re using the same hosting account, you don’t have to change any of the upload details in your Freeway file. Your hosting company should help and advise you how to do this.

Hello all!

I’ve worked out with Claire, what the issues are. The domain is
parked and therefore no publicly accessible files are available via
the normal routes. I’ve given her instructions on uploading through
the backdoor, via the IP address, etc. She should be up and running
soon!

Hi Claire,

If you’re keeping the same web hosting service but just changing
the domain name, the password your domain name provider has given
you will be for managing the domain(s) and not related to uploading.

The could not connect to FTP server error sounds like your new
domain is not yet pointing to your web host or at least not where
the FTP server resides. You will need to keep the same username,
password and directory settings in Freeway that you were using
before and alter the server to make sure it’s pointing to your web
host’s FTP server.

You will likely have some details from your web host that contain
an IP address for the FTP server and if not, I would expect that it
would be listed somewhere in your account area.
