Changing isp / email address ?

Hi chaps, we are possibly moving house, I am currently with a company that we buy all our services from gas, electric, broadband etc. I’m pretty happy with them but am thinking about changing supplier. This is no real problem but for the alteration of my email address which is, of course, lodged with hundreds of suppliers, banks, clubs etc etc. Changing this is going to be a nightmare (I’m pretty sure the ISP won’t offer a forwarding service) - I think I can keep the email with a free dial-up service from them … anyway … I just thought I’d put this dilemma here for some intelligent advice - hope it’s not too boring ! Regards Roger

One option is to get a free email address from something like Gmail or Yahoo!. The only issue with this kind of address is that there’s no guarantee they will be around forever.

Another option is to get your own domain and use that email address. When you have your own domain, you can keep it no matter where it’s hosted, and create as many addresses as you like.

You still have to change, but it should last longer. Another suggestion I have is to do one of the above suggestions before you change suppliers. As emails come in to the old address, you can go “oh, yes!” and update them as you are reminded.

Yes you’re right. I stopped using my supplied ISP email address for
anything important other than they contact me with it.

Reason? An ISP service is more likely to change that an important
domain name you own. Their default email is their hook to keep you
with them. It leaves you free to look around for the best connection
deals as and when they come up.

Yes Joe, thanks - I could atart the process of change now and I agree david - I really don’t like being tied to them, although their service has been pretty good I’d like the flexibility. Good of you both - Roger
