Is it possible convert an standalone item into an instance of a Master item? If not, is it possible to place an instance of a Master item on a page that doesn’t already have it. Reapply Master doesn’t seem to do it.

Reapply Master doesn’t seem to do it.
The page will have to be based on the Master where the item exists first.
Then if you have added an Item to the Master it should appear on the child without reapplying the Master.

Let me put my question in another way.
I have a page based on a Master:
if I have deleted an instance of a Master item, how can I get it back? Reapply Master doesn’t seem to work.
if I have placed a no-Master item on that page, can it be converted into an instance of a Master item?

In other words can it be relinked to the Master item? No it can’t.
Not quite sure why Reapply Master is not working for you.
Have you tried making a slight change to the Master and then try Reapplying to the child.

I was referring:
I mean that Reapply Master doesn’t work in respect of reapplying deleted instances.
It works in reapplying other settings but it doesn’t reapply, i.e. reinsert a deleted instance.

I still find Masters and their linkages to be unpredictable at times,
though I am trying hard to make them work for me. I also find that
sometimes adding a new element to a Master does not always reflect to the
child page, and I am sometimes reluctant to reapply the master as it can
sometimes be destructive to content. Because of the limitations of Undo and
so forth, I find it easier to copy/paste a master item into the child.
Sometimes frustrating, no matter what I do.
Best to keep Masters as simple and basic structures as possible I think.
