Coping with an extremely long list...

I have a long list to put together for a client.
I ahev tried using the scroll content/layer/button combination which I’ve used before and can get the list to display but unfortunately the list is so long that it extends beyond the range of the work area which is currently 1850px high.

I have looked at walters scriptaculous scroll which looks promising for shorter items. Not being fully conversant with how this scipt works then I’m not sure how it moves the layer when the toggle is moved and how the speed and distance between the button and the moving layet are defined.

My question is which method is best for extremely long lists and how do I overcome the height restriction?

Or there may be another way…
Cheers

First, you can set the page height to anything you like (up to some limit, which is truly ridiculously tall), and you won’t have to worry about your published page becoming that tall. The page height in Freeway is just a starting point. The published page will be whatever height would encompass the bottom-most visible item on your layout.

Second, the Scriptaculous scroller can scroll an element of any height, because it’s just doing some arithmetic to figure out the percentage of the inner element to show based on the percentage of the scroller that the thumb is set to. So there’s no limit per se, except that if you pasted the entire Constitution in there or something, the scroller thumb could be a little twitchy since 1px of movement would equal a jump larger than one window’s worth of the content.

Thanks for the feedback Walter.

I’ve gotten over this by setting the page height to 2500px. I Overcame a bit of a mental block on things on this so thanks for pushing the right buttons!

The scriptaculous scroller is something I’d like to use but I think I’d need to understand how to manage the variables and the relationship between the scrollable text and the button and how they move.
Is there any insight you can offer on this?

The effect behaves nearly like a Finder window with lots more content than will fit. It doesn’t have a proportional thumb control as written, but i have seen other Prototype-based examples that do, so it’s not impossible to add. Basically you have a track element (called the elevator in Mac OS) and a control that the user slides along that track (called the thumb).

Step through the example I posted (quite some time ago) and see if you can make a simple example work. Then you can expand on it so it works with your actual content.
