Crazy-fun panorama stuff

Okay, now I’m really having fun!
http://www.panoramaphotographer.com/california/pacific-ocean-view-2.html

Click the ‘little planet’ button on the left… woo-hoo!

Site made in Freeway, with the panoramas placed using a large markup
item in each individual panorama page, tweaked to load the right SWF
item, which then loads the appropriate image parts and XML file.

Wow. Very cool … and way over my head. I’m not sure when I would
even use something like that, but I’d sure like to have the know-how.
Plus, I’d like to GO to that beautiful place!

I wanted a Mustang convertible but the hire place didn’t have it
ready when I arrived. They offered me a brand-new Mazda MX5
convertible, and it was actually a bit of dream on the Big Sur coast
highway; rather lighter and more nippy than the Mustang - which was
good on those countless corners where one side has a 500ft drop to
rocks and ocean…

Hi,

I am very new to Freeway - but an old hand at design (on Mac). So - the tekky stuff is difficult for me - but I am learning.

Just love this! We live in Greece on a very southern peninsula - overlooking Skiathos and Evia islands and are building a small cottage for renting for ‘luxury eco’ holidays. As the site has sea views 180 degrees and high cliffs the other 180 this panoramic idea would be brilliant for the website that I will want to do.

So - now you are going to hate me… how do you do this?? In non-tekky language if poss. Think Quark and Photoshop. Think blonde…!

Just send Keith a plane ticket and lend him a little hairdresser’s car and he will do it for you - no problem

Heh. I’ll post a more detailed explanation off-list, but in short…

I take a number of photos all around, and up and down.
I use a fisheye lens so I don’t have to take too many shots (six
around, one up and one composite one down), and I use special
panorama head equipment with a tripod so the camera rotates around
the optical center of the lens. This eliminates parallax - where near
and far objects appear to shift relative to each other - in the
overlapping areas.
The images are stitched together using specialist software, then
processed using other software into a form ready for the panorama
‘engine’ software, either Flash or QuickTime-based.

There’s some info in the FAQ page:

Sheesh! Now I wish I’d taken the other one they offered!

(It was a hardtop Corvette. But I wanted a convertible and
something that wouldn’t shoot me over a cliff with a jet-lagged
twitch of the accellerator pedal.)

Sharon - are you really Meryl Streep in disguise, and the island really the one used in ‘Mamma Mia?’

WOW!!!

OK joke over - I know that you really have a “normal” car Keith. Let’s face it there is no way your students would let you forget it if you turned up in an MX5.

Personally I would probably have taken the Mazda rather than the hardtop Corvette as well. We don’t get enough sun here to pass up the opportunity to get some rays on thinning domes when on holiday.

Hmm. Actually… Mazda Bongo campervan, Yamaha Dragstar XVS650 (soon
to go on sale), a tandem and an off-road unicycle. ‘Normal’ may not
be quite the right word.

… and an off-road unicycle.

Hmm… That explains the Borg attachment on the right side of your head cleverly disguised as a…Cannon? Nikon?

Actually, nothing can explain an off-road unicycle. But as for the
‘camera’… you’ll understand when you’ve been assimilated.

Ah… Well I have been looking for more simplicity in my life.

Where is the nearest assimilation center?

Just revisiting these Panoramas Keith - especially the Pacific Coast Highway ones - as I am just finalising my summer plans which includes the drive down that very road from SF to LA as part of a 3 week, half century, birthday trip taking in 10 days in Palm Springs and finishing in Vegas.

Any recommendations for accommodation on that stretch - don’t want to do it in one go. The Hearst Mansion?
