Have a look at the carousel on this website. I like the way the panes are shaped, any idea how to do this?

Is it a layered graphic placed over the top of the panes with the middle cut out to the desired shape?

Yes, you got it in one. It’s a PNG (/images/bg-featureWrap.png), which
I could spot before I viewed source since it is perfectly smooth at
the curves. Background-colored matte and transparent middle.
