CSS menu - fit horizontally

How in the world do you get the new CSS menu to fit across the width of the page? I simply put a colored box behind it for now - but there must be a “correct” way to do this, no? Sure wish the options were built into the action…

Thanks for the feedback, I will log this as a suggestion.

When I see an action I almost expect it to “do it all” for me… thanks for considering it.

If you want to have the division the menu to have the same color stretch across the screen, try using the new background graphic effect. Select the div then go to the graphics pallet and select background effect. This is the farthest button to the left in the pallet. All this effect does is allow a background color be applied to the div. Once that is done, set the background color in the CSS Menu action dialog to match.

I think I figured it out - the color DOES stretch the length of the
window with the 20px high menu navigation starting at the left. But
when I preview it - WOW - it goes from 20px high to something 3x
bigger than that! What happened?

If you are using the graphic background effect on the division, make sure you only click on the far left button. This button will only color the background. All of the other buttons will increase the size of the background area with the effects they add.

Ok, I click the CSS box - is this the “on the division”? I am not
clear on that term. Under the inspector pallet I go down to “Graphic
Effect” and select the far left option “Background”. This is what
you are describing, so I suspect I am not making my selection of the
object correct (by just clicking on the whole object)??

I do know what you mean about the size increasing with outer glow,
etc. - I dont have any of those selected or applied. That panel alone
is a bear to figure out if the effect is on/off.

Sorry for the confusion with terminology. The division is the html text box your css menu list is part of. One question: is the css menu text box inside another html text box?

The rest of your description sounds like you added the background effect correctly. The other thing to check is in the CSS Menu action window for border and divider settings as these can also make things bigger, although not as big as you are describing.

Yeah, it is a subtle thing. The buttons have a slighly darker grey background when selected. Easy to miss.

There is no additional border on the CSS menu (action). When I
select the HTML box I am clicking only once (not double clicking to
see the indented list of text). This menu is all alone, not inside
another html box. I don’t get this!!

Lets try a step by step approach:

  1. Draw or insert an html box on your page.
  2. Click in the html box to get the text cursor and type in your first menu entry.
  3. With the text box selected, go to the inspector pallet and open the list option at the bottom of the pallet.
  4. Click on the right arrow to turn your html item into a bulleted list.
  5. Type in the rest of your menu items in your list.
  6. Click away from the html box to deselect it. Now click on the html box only to select, not to get the text cursor.
  7. Go to inspector pallet and open the html graphic effects area. Click on the far left button ONLY to add a background color. Choose your color from the small color picker (intially white). This will be the over color of the menu box.
  8. If not already open, open the Actions window. With the html box selected go to the Item menu, the under Actions select CSS Menu.
  9. When the CSS Action Menu opens in the actions window set the background color to be the same as the background effect color you set in the Inspector Pallet.
  10. Check “horizontal” box to make menu appear a single line of text.
  11. Preview.

You should see your menu buttons and any extra area after the buttons of the html box with the same background color.

Well I did just that and it worked like a charm - I added only two words in the list. WHen I copied it and placed it on the master page, the list extended longer… therefore on the pages, the menu bar is expanded the height of that text list!! I thought it worked… but it didnt!! I still have the height issue, but the background color is just fine.

Now when I try to publish is says the CSS action was not applied correctly and it will not publish. Then I constantly get the overflow text area too!! ARGH!

I am not sure if I can post the picture above in the forum, but a picture is worth a thousand words!

A screenshot of m problem is here:
http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1oJy8X4W0j7eZje7RMspZg9BTGPoM0

The yellow box indicates the original html box I started with, by typing only “home” and “about” to start the css menu, at 22px high.

The red arrow indicates how the overflow shows when I double click the html box to add the next menu item “products”.

Problem - the height of the css menu now gives an overflow text error and when I publish I get the “you applied the css action incorrectly”

??? round and round I go… ???

Ah, you set the height of the menu box to 22px, yes? This is causing abnormal behavior. The CSS Menu action takes care of the menu bar height for you. You should not have to restrict the height of the html box you put the list into.

This may also be a beta bug related issue as, in my opinion, it should give you a warning that setting the html box height may cause problems.

Take the 22px height out of the html menu box by clicking off the height size in the inspector pallet. Republish and see it that helps.

Yes, I have tried setting and not setting the height (putting html box to shrink and/or selecting height box to inactive). The further problem lies with this when I do that… I cannot place ANY html box below that menu - I have to give ample space for it otherwise I get overlaps and errors stating objects will not publish. Unless I would have to put all those into one html box… but still, there is the overlap issue!

I noticed in the code of your page references to tables. Are you using unlayered objects?

I think there may be a bug in the item hierarchy. Normally you can drag items around in the list of items on the left to change their hierarchy on the page, but that does not seem to be working, at least it doesn’t on my test page. Because of this the drop down menus are behind the objects i placed on the page after the menu box.

I guess we really have to take these results with a grain of salt as this is beta software and prone to have problems.

I had a similar problem with the CSS menu. It showed a large grey box below the menu items when previewed in IE6 blocking content below.

I finally gave up after a few emails here in the forum and went back to FW4 figuring its a bug in the beta version of FW5.

Darn, I had a table at the top but I deleted it. I am trying to work on a fresh page but it appears I can’t even get my FIRST results to work - where I used a solid html box behind the css menu. Everytime the css menu give the overflow text error - it wont publish. Argh!

Is that item layered? It sounds like it isn’t…
