I’ve been using padding and margins previously, but then tried various other ideas to force the space to be retained, such as inserting another (empty) html item, but as you doubtless already know, it didn’t help.
There are a lot of options for width and height, when you have 3 or 4 items to play with … which makes it hard to know which is the best, but admittedly, hours of trial and error is a reasonably effective way of learning. 
I shall pad and fudge.
