CSS menus...

I guess the height of the menu items is not editable? If I want to put a small, horizontal menu on or next to a color bar so the background color extends the width of the page, it seems to be pretty hard to line them up… And as far as blends or other FX, that would have to be a background picture correct? Hmmm… if using a picture, would that enlarge the vertical space???

You can adjust the height of the menu’s colour bar by changing the leading through the Style settings. A bit of trial and error is required but it works.

Hmmm… I’ll check that out. But, if you use a background image, will that change the size of the area?

Not tried that. I guess the trial and error approach will yield the answer. Though I would have thought that in that case the dimensions will be set by the height and width of the image.

I can’t seem to control the height of the menu items with leading, space before and after etc. I tried placing a picture in the background image, but again, I can’t seem to make the menu adjust to the picture properly… I’m wondering can you use graphic text with CSS menus? My attempts seem to produce no adjustment to the spacing… or way to center the text in the menu either. Hmmm… I see some value in this, but it doesn’t seem very flexible? Or maybe I’m missing something.

Hi dhrose,

The CSS Menus don’t have a defined height, this has been done so that
the submenus always meet up with level above. If there was a defined
height then there would be a ugly gaps between everything.

We will log a suggestion on the database here for allowing edits to
the padding of the cells to be made (essentially this would let you
change the height of the cells).

Cheers,

Joe.

Submenus, now that’s something else. I can’t see how they work at all. How do you get the main menu to trigger the submenu?

A submenu is simply an indented list, the level of indentation
determines the level of the submenu.

Consider this:

Main menu
Submenu 1
Submenu 2
Submenu 2
Submenu 1
Main menu
Main menu
Submenu 1
Submenu 1
Main menu

Joe

Thanks Joe, but I’m none the wiser. Where do you put this indented list? How does the first item in the main menu trigger the first submenu, and so on.

Hi Simon,

I just realised that the web interface for the list won’t show the formatting that I am putting into the email. This was made on the web so sorry for those on the list if the entities and tags come through.

Try typing out this list in Freeway and indenting it the same way as I have done, apply the CSS Menus Action and take a look in the browser. Change it to horizontal to see the different layout. Here’s a list that might make things a bit clear with regards to what triggers what:

Main 1

 Submenu 1.1 of Main 1

  Submenu 1.1.1 of Submenu 1.1

  Submenu 1.1.2 of Submenu 1.1

Main 2

  Submenu 2.1 of Main 2

Main 3

  Submenu 3.1 of Main 3

  Submenu 3.2 of Main 3

  Submenu 3.3 of Main 3

   Submenu 3.3.1 of Submenu 3.3

   Submenu 3.3.2 of Submenu 3.3

Main 4

 Submenu 4.1 of Main 4

As you can see, the submenus of the cells are the indented lists directly below. “Main 1” has one submenu which then has a further 2 submenus and so on.

I hope this helps.

Joe

Yahh boo pbpbpbpbpbp! (ASCII raspberry

The previous post looked perfect to me, but this one’s peppered with
encoded non-breaking space codes. :frowning:

Hahahaha, pbpbpbpbpbpbpb to you too! That ASCII character needs to be made official.

Yeah sorry, I looked at the first mail I sent on the web and the list I crafted was all on one line.

Is there a way to do anything so that we can get the formatting from the email to come appear on the web and vice versa?

If you make sure, when you are crafting your e-mail, that you put a
tab (or four spaces) before any line that you want to appear as code,
then it will look perfect.

Main menu
	Submenu 1
		Submenu 2
		Submenu 2
	Submenu 1
Main menu
Main menu
	Submenu 1
	Submenu 1
Main menu

This triggers the “code view”. The first level of tab is eaten by the
processor, so all you see is the 2nd and on up.

If I find the time, I will put the little toolbar on the text box so
you can get all wizzy with the wig.

After messing around with it for awhile I managed to get this so far… which does some of what I expect. But doesn’t give you much flexibility… it would be really cool if you could control padding/spacing either with an image, or with text settings.

Here’s something weird though… this looks fine in the preview in FW5, and did look fine in the browser… but now it’s doing this! Hmmm… seems though the javascript gets jumbled or broken, and I can’t figure what does it?

Are you asking a question about Combo FX now? What’s the problem?
Seems to be working as expected on that page.

In my browser, when selecting the first button, the sliding text pushes the second button, behind the third button, instead of sliding the second button downward like it’s supposed to do… and like selecting the second button does to the third.

Hi dhrose,

You need to cut the graphic items out of the headline sections and
paste them in as in-flow items (in the same way you did with the text
and headline HTML items inside the structures parent item). You can
then place the text I beam just before the graphic and set it’s
alignment to Center.

The problem seems to be specific to Firefox, I’ll take a look and see
if I can find a workaround but generally speaking you should be
working with in-flows only for that sort of structure.

Cheers,

Joe
