Custom padding/margin view

Is there any way to have the custom padding/margins within inspector always on view? I’m using it so much that I’m getting tired of having to select ‘custom’ each time. Is there a bod out there that can write a quick action so the custom pop up menu is always on view???

Just a thought…

Sadly, Actions don’t have access to the main application interface,
only the Actions palette. There’s nothing you could write in an Action
that would cause that to stay open. Plus, I think Custom is a modal
dialog, so you wouldn’t want to have that open and blocking clicks
anywhere else on screen.

Now if you wanted someone to write an Action to set custom padding/
margin, that would of course be trivial, but then it would also break
the design interface slightly, since those new custom attributes
wouldn’t be visible to Freeway except at publish time. This could lead
to an awkward design workflow since you wouldn’t have a WYSIWYG view
of the page while finessing your layout.

I take your point Walt, so perhaps this could (needs to) be a inspector palette request for v6!

Something in the back of my head says you should be able to set up a style to perform this action. It would need to be added through the “extended” button on a normal text style.

Can someone confirm this would be possible, please? I’m sure I’m not going potty.

Hi heather,

I’m not looking to have this on a style. I know how to do that.

I’d like there to always be on view in the Inspector the margin and padding dialogue boxes so you could see Top:, Right:, Bottom:, Left: always open and not have to see a dash (-) next to the custom settings indicating you;ve made some changes, but not applied it to all padding or all margins.

I know what you mean, but a base style can be applied to an HTML box itself. That’s what I was thinking.

I agree with you that there could be a better way of dealing with the custom padding dialog in the Inspector, though.

You could do that – great idea, Heather!

Make the style in your Styles palette. Use the Extended button in the
Edit Style dialog to enter ‘padding’ : ‘24px’ or whatever you like in
the Name and Value fields. Name the style something memorable. Then in
the design view, click once on the box you want to have the padding
attribute, and click on the style name. It should “take”. You won’t
see any feedback in the design view, but you will in Preview.

Remember with padding that this increases the box dimensions, so if
you draw a 200px square on the page at 400,400 offsets from the top-
left corner, and your style adds 20px padding to that box all around,
you will see a box in Preview that starts at 380,380 and is 440x440px.
