Custom web fonts from Monotype

Good to see Monotype getting into the act:
http://www.webfonts.fonts.com/

I’d be very interested to hear what people think of this. Any first
impressions? First thoughts?

How much will it cost?

Will we see an explosion of badly-designed web sites using all the
wrong fonts in all the wrong places? Will it be the 1980s DTP
revolution all over again?

Sorry, those were a bit negative, weren’t they.

I agree, Heather. Some people are truly going to destroy their websites because they can now use Comic Sans. Ugh.

I think that’s my biggest pet peeve about turning people loose. That and those who say leading in regards to web content instead of line-height.

Am I missing something - I don’t see an example!

Sounds interesting. According to this…

“At the conclusion of the beta program, your account will be converted to a free Trial Tier account, at which time you will also have the opportunity to upgrade. Free Trial Tier account users will still have access to hundreds of fonts, including all of the fonts available through the beta program. Please note, that we may at times serve advertisements on the Web sites of active free Trial Tier account users.”

So there will be multi-tiers. Free font account with adverts, or paid account for an amount we have yet to learn.

You have to love the line “We may at times serve advertisements on the web sites of active free Trial Tier account users.” Great. No thanks.

Oh, there are FAR worse sins than mixing up terminology!

For example serving ads on someone’s site after running a beta
programme. Interesting twist there, Monotype.

The concern with this, and indeed Google’s offering, is that they they can pull the plug, and leave your site without its fonts. I’m always a bit wary about resources which are hosted elsewhere. You never know when they will vanish…
