Desperate for help with rollovers

I have trouble every single time with rollovers, even though h I follow the tutorial exactly.

What am I doing wrong?

  1. Working in the open pasteboard area of the site, I draw a rectangle to be used as a button.

  2. I duplicate the button and recolor it use it for the rollover button.

3, I create a text box.

  1. I align all three objects vertically and horizontally.

  2. I group the items and name the group.

  3. I go back in (as the tutorial says to, and lock each individual item in the rollover group.

  4. I go to actions>rollovers and set the checks for each item.

  5. I then duplicate the rollover group to make four or five buttons. I go back in a rename each of them as needed.

  6. I place the 4-5 buttons on the page.

  7. All hell breaks loose. Buttons do not work at all, sometimes are behind a base graphic. One works, others don’t.

  8. When I tried to get back in a change the color of the rollover, the colors do not change.

  9. I have no idea (because the tutorial does not say anything) abput the checks on combine graphics or combine children. Sometimes combine children is there; other times not.

I’m baffled…

Are you working entirely with graphic items? When you say you “create a text box” does that mean you are adding a third item in a rollover stack? Is that item an html item? I’m not sure that rollovers will work if an html item is added.
Here is what I would try…

  1. Draw a graphic box, color it as you like, add your text directly into the box by clicking in the box and getting cursor. Name this item “button” for example.

  2. Duplicate the item, name the duplicate item, “buttonroll”.

  3. Recolor the background of the “buttonroll” item.

  4. Group the two items.

  5. With the group selected, add the rollover action. Set the check marks in the appropriate space for each of the three items.

  6. Publish this and see if works. If it does then duplicate the group.

Rich

I had done that, but I kept having problems in just about every area. The rolls would not work, or they would get hidden behind a background, or I could not go back in later to change the colors, or sometimes “layer” or “combine graphic” or “combine children” would seem to check on uncheck on their own. NONE of this is covered by the reference guide.

I am using three elements – two colored boxes and a text box, which is what the tutorial uses as an example. Should be the same as far as following your routine,.

I appreciate your help. As it turns out, I just spent an hour rebuilding all of them and finally got them to work.
