Divide one site into two

I may have shot myself in one foot already and want to avoid shooting myself in the other also…

I have a had a site that has been growing over the years. www.a-falstaff-collector.com It grew to about 400 pages, 3000 images, videos, etc… Then I agreed to mange part of another large site. coastermania.com. However the custodians of that site have built the site with an old AOL web design program. Works for them but incompatible with my Mac without some real hoop jumping and then probably not then. So I completely rebuilt my part of the site with Freeway Pro. 200 or so pages, 2000+ images. To get my part online quickly I built it onto the tail end of my main site. Have only one hidden link between the two sections. However, I now have a 600 + page site. I am not sure what I did lately but on a recent upload it did a full overwrite and took nearly 3 hours. images, large pdfs, videos, etc. Something I would like to avoid in the future.

I want to split the site.

I will be uploading the new site to a different host than where my original is maintained.

Can I:

1 Duplicate the site.
2. Discard the unwanted pages.
3. upload the new site to the new host
4. What will this do to the site folder? Will it be modified so that it will not be usable by my original site.
5. Should I duplicate the site and site folder and move to a separate folder before modifying and uploading.

Guidance will be appreciated. Don Williams

There is a knowledgebase article about splitting a site on the SoftPress site.

I have gone over that article and looked at the tutorial that at one time existed. It appears to me that yes it splits a single site into multiple parts which can be worked on and uploaded individually. But, it isn’t clear to me how it will deal with site resources and the data in the site folder if you break the site into two distinct and different sites. I am not too worried about links as there really aren’t any of importance between the two sections.

If I break out the new site from the old and upload it, will it only upload the resources requested in the new site or will it upload all the resources from both sites and only use those it needs but still use the memory for the unused resources. DOES THIS MAKE ANY SENSE? And if it doesn’t upload everything, does it discard any of the unuploaded reources which I need for my original site.

Sometimes my brilliant ideas arn’t so smart.

Thanks, Don

Sorry Don - I was trying to find that SP article/tutorial to refresh my memory on the method offered but I couldn’t find it. So my advice is general and not specific.

A FW document/site will only upload the resources it requires and is not aware of the requirements of another FW doc. If there are existing files in the server space that you are uploading to then these may be overwritten.

With a refresher on that particular method I can probably offer more specific advice - but it wont be tonight as it is pretty late here.
