Do images degrade in quality over time?

I know it sounds weird, but I’m pretty sure over time images lose a fair bit of quality. I’ve noticed on a few sites, that pictures don’t look like they used to when first launched. It’s like the JPG compression has been increased significantly.

Am I going mad?

I know it sounds odd…
but the chances are that it’s your hardware thats improved. I remember when we all went over to LCD screens and we suddenly realised that the amount of compression amounts we had used for years was way too much… Oddly enough we just couldn’t see it on the old CRT screens, but it was plainly clear to see for all and sundry if they had LCD’s… so the chances are that those images where always like that… it’s just that you can see it now… Unless you haven’t changed a thing in the past few years and its something completely different… :o)

Thanks Max - it’s a point of view I suppose. Can’t imagine that images actually degrade, it doesn’t make sense does it?

Nope, it’ll be down to perception. Most of us probably shoot larger,
higher-quality images as standard now, compared with just a couple of
years ago. I know when I look at some of my older panos I get the
urge to dig out the RAWs and restitch, or at least find the equirect
and regenerate the final pano at a higher quality and resolution.

If this is always via the same screen?
Maybe it is deteriorating.

The only other thing that I can think of if you are talking about your own
sites and not generally - is whether the setting in Freeway for compression
has changed. Though each value can be changed individually - they will be
assigned a default compression when Freeway converts them. Check that this
is where you want it to be.

Going mad is of course a possibility - but it sounds like a very
unimaginative route.
Failing sight - well my images improve when I put my glasses on!
But my belief (?) is that Freeway will generate a fresh jpg from the
original each time you publish the page.

all the best

Yes it could be that I suppose Brian it is a few years old, either that or my eyesight’s rubbish from staring at monitors all day long.

Thanks Keith.

I have noticed that image quality on my Mac varies depending on

which app I’m using to view it. I have the same image as part of a
screen saver, in iPhoto, in a slide show in iMovie and other places.
The image quality as a screen saver far exceeds any other way of
viewing it. It’s even better–surprisingly–that in iPhoto.

I haven't kept track of what the quality level is in Freeway or in

various browsers once it’s on a webpage, but there no doubt are
differences. This might have something to do with what you’re seeing.

Apparently - and against my own innate sense - screen staring doesn’t seem
to be causing eyesight deterioration - according at least to a couple of
opticians I have spoken too.

I know that as I write I am screened out - and some of that is felt in the
forehead and around the eyes - if not in them.

But seriously if your eyes are losing clarity you’ll know it when you try to
read small print and find yourself holding it further and further away to
see. Or realizing that without reading glasses you simply cannot see.
