domain / server issue

Good afternoon,

I have a question. .I am hosting a website w have-host… and most of my sites there are working.

one in particular states - can not find the server. I have checked in the cpanel and it is there and all the files are there. what would cause me to get that error?

and what can I do to fix it? I also have opened up hosting at machighway (thank you softpress) is there a way of moving the files from one to the other?

the freeway file was lost in my crash a couple of years ago.

thank you

Julie

Try to look it up from the command line (Terminal.app)

host yourhostnamehere.com

see if you get an IP address back.

Then try it in reverse, using the IP address:

host 12.34.56.78

and see if you get the same hostname back.

What you describe sounds like a DNS problem, where the site is there, but nobody knows how to reach it. DNS is a globally distributed web of servers that know how to translate a human-readable domain into a machine-readable IP address. Even though this system is incredibly fault-tolerant, it can get confused on occasion, either through error or malicious effort. When that happens, it can be difficult to diagnose and fix, and the fixes generally take a little while to propagate through the entire web of servers, anywhere between hours and days.

So I thought the site was with GD - according to whois

So you need to transfer from GD to MacHighway - unless you have a duplication on have-host.

Straightforward download via FTP (from either) to your Mac and same upload to MacHighway.

And no - I can’t get on GD either.

GoDaddy have the entire domain registration, though, and if their DNS servers aren’t responding because of this hack, your site is invisible to the world.

is there a way of transfuring the files in have-host to machighway wo recreating the site right now?

So I thought the site was with GD - according to whois

So you need to transfer from GD to MacHighway - unless you have a duplication on have-host.

Straightforward download via FTP (from either) to your Mac and same upload to MacHighway.

And no - I can’t get on GD either.

If the site is registered, not just hosted with GD…

DNS is used for connection to a server using any protocol. If you are trying to FTP to a named server, the FTP application will use DNS to convert the name address to a number address. If you happen to know the number address of your server, then you’re good. You can FTP to the 123.45.6.78 style address and Bob’s your uncle.

But unless you’ve got a serious server where you pay extra to “own” an IP address, the usual shared hosting will not reply if you type that numerical address into your browser. The reason is that hundreds or thousands of sites may share that one IP address, and rely on the domain name to disambiguate which one you mean specifically. What you’ll probably get is the hosting provider’s site, or maybe a blank “It Works!” page.
