E product variation action

Delta Dave mentioned this to me and I can’t find the action anywhere. Where can I get it?

Thanks!

I’m so sorry. I’m looking all over and I’m just not seeing it. Is there a place I can download it from?

Create a menu/list form item then apply the action to it.

With the menu/list selected Item>Actions>E Product Variations

Okay,

When I do this and try to apply the action I get the following error:

“Cannon use this action: you must apply the “E-Shop Settings” Action to the folder that contains this page, or one of its containing folders.” I moved my shop page into a folder where I can put all my shop pages, but I don’t see a way to apply the action to the folder. What am I missing?

Thanks,
Doty

You have to apply the FW E-Shop Settings action to the enclosing folder.

Select the folder in the site pane (which contains all your shop pages) at the left of your screen. Then Page>Folder actions>E-Shop Settings

Got it. Thanks again! (Going from page>folder did not seem right in my brain!) It’s been many years since I set up an ecommerce site and it seems I forgot everything!

So, I take it one must have a mals account to use this action, is that right? My client has not decided on his shopping cart solution yet. At the moment, it is hosted by intuit, but since that won’t work with my Mac stuff, I’ve been talking to him about Mals (which I’ve used) or ecwid (which I have not). So, here are my two questions to you:

can you recommend one over the other (mals vs ecwid) (eventually he would like to be able to upload his own product, but I don’t think this is a deal breaker for him if that matters)

and two…

can I do anything to move forward before he commits to a shopping cart?

Also, if it matters, I think he wants to use paypal for everything.

Thank you again!!!

Yes

No - I haven’t used ecwid. But if adding his own stuff is a necessity then I dont think that Mals is an option.

One question I would be asking is “How many items are you likely to want to sell on your site?” The answer to that will better determine which cart and what features are required.

If you have a definitive list of products already then you could prepare all your images etc. but without a cart decision that part will have to wait.

He has quite a bit of product. You can see the beginning of my main page here: http://www.dotyshepard.com .

For each of those thirty characters, he will have six items on each individual shop page. (I only have one page started. You can see it by clicking on the bike character on the main home page. So 6 x 30 = 180. But if you count that he has six (in addition to the six I just mentioned) styles of shirts, each with a minimum of three size options and 5-8 color options, the number of actual buy buttons on his site could easily reach 500 I would think. And, he develops new characters monthly, so it’s definately going to grow.

I hope this is enough of an answer to your question. The site I will be replacing is currently at http://www.twoguysfourhands.com .

Thanks,
Doty

Using the E product variation action you actually only have one buy button that covers 1 product in all its different size and colour options.

But choosing a Cart is a serious decision that should not be taken lightly.

No matter which method you choose just now to change it in the future is going to be a big, expensive job.

Err on the side of caution. Overspec your cart and choose one that will handle as many products as he is ever likely to sell. Remember that if you use something like Mals then he is always going to have to pay you - or someone like you - to maintain it and you should make him aware of what that is going to cost him long term.

I would be tempted to use a system that he can update and add to himself - unless you particularly want to tie him to you.

There are hundreds out there to choose from and though I have no experience with ecwid it has to be worth a look. If Julie can integrate it into her FW sites then it must be pretty straightforward - no offence Julie.

Thanks Dave,

I’ll give ecwid another look. I’m tempted by Mals because it is what I know, for better and worse. It’s been a long time since I’ve done it, but that is better than nothing. I think my client is moving toward having me do everything, as his business seems to be growing by the day, but I will keep this in mind. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts & wisdom.

If not ecwid then something similar.

I think my client is moving toward having me do everything, as his business seems to be growing by the day

And in the harsh reality of life a successful client will leave a small designer/company behind as their business outgrows your resources.

David,

On your totally tartan site, you have a drop down menu type of deal for your items. How did you do that? When I do the menu/list and e-product variation, it gives me one very long list.

Also, I have three things that need to be chosen by the buyer, adult/youth - specific size - and color. Do I need to have all these in one menu/list, or should I separate them?

I’ve updated my page, but it ain’t pretty…yet!

Quite simply reduce the height of the menu item to the height of one product and it becomes a drop down.

Separate them - less confusion.
