I have a page with a Google map embedded for location of an event. One of
the event sponsors, however, is Microsoft, and this person wants me to use
an MSN Live Search map instead of Google. I have spent the last 90 minutes
searching for info on embedding a Live Search map, and I simply can’t find
anything. Is it even possible? I found a couple of places where it says it
is NOT possible, but no place where it says it IS. No code, no nothin’. I
asked the guy if he could give me some guidance, and he gave me a link to a
developer page/manual on the MS site, which was not at all what I needed.
Am I completely overlooking it? Does anyone know if it can be done?

Hi Robin,
Have a look here;

> **[Outlook – free personal email and calendar from Microsoft](https://outlook.live.com/owa/)**
>
> Get free Outlook email and calendar, plus Office Online apps like Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Sign in to access your Outlook, Hotmail or Live email account.

and click on one of the links in the line;

Adding a basic search box or an advanced search box to your website

The search uses Kumo ([http://www.kumo.com](http://www.kumo.com)), Microsoft’s new search offering.
Regards,
Tim.

Thanks for the link, Tim. I’ve been going through this and it is STILL not
clear at all if I can or cannot embed a map. I see I can get the search bar
in there, but is that it? And then from the search bar, people can get to
the map? That’s what I’m getting from this, and if that’s true, it’s pretty
lame.
You know what, screw it (and Microsoft). I’m just going to link to the map
and tell them if they can’t give me SPECIFIC instructions or code, then
that’s the best I can do for them. The worst they can do is fire me!

Hi Robin,

I’m really sorry but I just re-read your initial mail. For some reason I thought you were after a search feature. I’ll have a trawl and see if I can find the live maps link for you.

Regards,
Tim.

If you click on the orange ‘Use the Interactive SDK Now’ button you can create your own map and save the HTML directly from the page.
It is then just a matter of pasting this in your Freeway document as an HTML markup.
I hope this helps.

Regards,
Tim.

I have used that link before, and it still is not what I need. Or, I am a
complete and utter moron. Not ruling that out, mind you, but there doesn’t
seem to be any place where I can enter the address I want the map to
display. It gives you the default map of the United States or a specific
map, which is the Space Needle in Seattle, but no place to enter a location.
Maybe I have to also add the code for the search bar and then people have to
manually enter a location? If that is so, I don’t want that either.
I did use the code for the default map, and yes, that’s what you get on the
web page. Plus, you can’t do any of this in Safari. I had to use Firefox,
and even that has issues, so I’m wondering if something is missing from the
page, something that only appears in IE. But, if I have to use a PC to get
this to work, then I’m back to saying screw it!

Which is why the Google map is so popular, and I’d never even heard of this map until your client brought it up.

There is a published Google Maps API and all sorts of example code to make a map of any location on earth and embed it into your site exactly the way you like. If your client is interested in being found by customers, then there’s a solution for that.

If your client is interested in stroking Microsoft’s ego for some reason, then there’s a fundamental disconnect with that premise (seeing as how it will not lead to your client being found by customers). Unless your client wants to be bought by Microsoft.

Right, that’s exactly it: Google makes it so easy and convenient to embed
the map, whereas Microsoft makes it very difficult, if it’s even possible.
It’s just the way they go about things that is all wrong.
No, my client WORKS for Microsoft! And he can’t even tell me how to do it!
Ergo screw it. I’ve wasted enough of everyone’s time on this. I thank you
and Tim for your input. I just sent the guy an email and told him that the
Google map was staying, unless he could provide the actual code for the Live
Search map.
