EPS Import

I am using Intaglio 2.9.7 on OS X 10.5.2, and trying to import EPS files (produced by various other programs - see later).

First question: When I go File > Import, all the EPS filenames are greyed out. Is that normal?

(The Intaglio Help describes Import as “Import a PDF or image file into the current document” so perhaps that is as intended.)

Second, when I go File > Open and select an EPS file, Intaglio gives the message “Can’t complete this command. Intaglio can’t import this file.” (Similarly on dragging the file onto the Intaglio icon in the dock - same message.)

This happens with vector-based EPS files that were created by Freehand and CorelDraw. Files created by Illustrator seem to be OK (unless they contain spot colours - then the spot colours get converted black rather than their CMYK equivalent).

With bitmap-based file imports, I’m getting the “can’t import” error message with EPS files from Photoshop - but EPS files created by Illustrator are OK.

The thing is… all of the above files open fine in Preview, and I think I read somewhere that Intaglio used the same routines to convert EPS to its ‘native’ PDF format, so I’m puzzled that Preview opens them but Intaglio doesn’t.

Stewart.

I do not know enough about the eps import abilities, but I think the
import of the Illustrator based files works, because Illustrator uses
since Version 9 or 10 some kind of internal PDF-based files.
The open in Preview/did not open in Intaglio thing is, beside this,
strange enough. Maybe Nick could explain it, but I think, he is busy
with the new Intaglio version .

Try opening the file in Preview (which should convert it from eps to pdf) then copy that into Intaglio.

There is a bug in 2.9.x (fixed in 3.0) recognizing EPS files that don’t have the classic Mac OS file type tag. A workaround is to open an empty drawing and drag the file into the drawing window.
