Exhibeo in FW responsive

So … in the hope that Joe is going to be letting a little metadata into Exhibeo sites, I’ve been looking a re-fitting my website to use Exhibeo.

I’ve spent a lot of time trying to work out the best way to fit Exhibeo into a responsive site … a very simple responsive site! … and having only a struggling knowledge of what I’m doing, I’m begging the question :

Should I be putting the Exhibeo html inside another html box in order to control its width/height and have it wrap on resize or is it fine to have it straight on the page? Which gives me most control and which is best practise?

Grant,

Check out the Backdraft documentation on Exhibeo: http://backdraft.onrampwebdesign.com/docs/exhibeo.html

Nothing on there is unique to Backdraft - it can be used in vanilla Freeway.

Thanks Caleb,

I’ve followed the docs, but it doesn’t work for me. The only way I can get the gallery (Showtime) to resize to fit within the window, is by setting a width percentage and height as flexible. The extended div styles do nothing at all that I can see.

I’ve tried various tests to see if it’s something to do with the inline/box setup that I’m using. You can see them here :

http://test-2.grantsymon.com/testSimple/test1.html
http://test-2.grantsymon.com/testSimple/test2.html
http://test-2.grantsymon.com/testSimple/test3.html
http://test-2.grantsymon.com/testSimple/test4.html

The real problem for me is that the vertical image (the red/middle one) does not resize to fit the available window unless you narrow the window. So if your monitor is not big enough vertically then the image is shown with a scroll bar and you may only see half of it, depending on monitor size. This is obviously useless.

You may also note, as posted on another thread, that the window does resize vertically on test2 but only once!! As soon as you change to another image, it no longer works until you clear the cache and reload the page. You can see my screen-grab movie of the problem here (in fact it shows the problem with vertical images too) :

Grant, I share your grief. I really am beginning to wonder why I am bothering with Exhibeo. I have nothing but trouble with it in responsive design.

I wish I could achieve your test 2 and 4 even. I can’t! No matter what I try, including the advice from Caleb.

I have nothing but problems with Exhibeo galleries, both in the resizing thing already mentioned, but also trying to get them to centre in a in-flow design.

Another issue I come across, particularly with Bloxx, is that often when the thumbnail is clicked on, only the first image shows, or even sometimes the thumbnails don’t show at all, only the first image in the gallery.

Not sure what to do. Is there an alternative to Exhibeo?

Iain,

I put my test files on my server for you to download and look at.

They’re very basic, so easy to understand. I’m just fumbling my way through, like yourself, so if I can manage then I’m sure you can.

There are many alternatives to exhibeo, but none that are perfect (in my view). I would very much like to have an integrated, simple solution and exhibeo is close, but perhaps needs a V2 to bring it up to date with FW7 (and also to add metadata/colour profiles). I currently use Juicebox, which is very capable, but I’d happily move to exhibeo if it addressed some of it’s (small?) issues. Another alternative is to use the jalbum platform, which has a plethora of gallery software, but NB, don’t go with a Flash based software, because Flash is dead (and full of holes and doesn’t work on iOS).

Grant, thanks a lot. however, there are a load of missing files. All the Exhibeo exports and a French Flag graphic.

Could you resend with those included?

Iain,

the flag doesn’t matter … you don’t need it and you can replace the exhibeo files with your own. I simply used the exhibeo action to apply the sample galleries (showcase … and the other one).

Thanks Grant. I just can’t get it to work. I replaced your exhibeo file with one of my own, get errors about missing resources and in the preview all that shows up is an icon in the top left which could be a small French flag, and the text Grant SYMON.

Sorry!

Iain,

the missing bits are just stuff from my site, they don’t matter and you don’t need them. This is just a quick test file I made for myself. I also thought you’d have your own exhibeo gallery and would know how to apply the FW Action for it, but perhaps this is why it’s not working?

Anyway … I’ve removed the bits for you and included a couple of exhibeo test files (click on the item then open the actions palette to choose/change them). I’ve also reset the site folder, so everything should be there, but really, you’re just looking at how the structure is made for it to resize (albeit ‘bugilly’) so you can apply it to your own site.

Actually Iain, I just read you post again and I think it’s just the site folder that you need to reset/select. Whatever, it should be okay in the new zip.

Grant, sorry, I just realised I forgot to reply.

There is no new zip file, I just get a 404 on the link.
