[Express] How to use Yahoo! Media Player in Freeway Express

I am attempting to embed the Yahoo! Media Player on one of my web pages. The webpage that I am using is from the Freeway Express Tutorials. As I am just learning and practicing, I have not published anything, so I am working locally on my iMac. The details of my issue are as follows:
The Yahoo! Media player does in fact engage when I click on a song link on my webpage
The media player does not actually play the selected song
The media player seems to not be aware of the song
Here’s the steps I took to embed the Yahoo! Media Player
In Freeway Express, select the ‘Insert’ menu item
Select ‘Markup item’ from the ‘Insert’ menu
Entered the following code in the ‘Markup item’ dialog box:

<//a href=“Instrumental1.mp3”>Instrumental

Note: I had to place a comment symbol in the above code, as the browser was executing the code. The code in my Freeway Express tutorial does not include the comment symbol.

Where ‘Instrumental1.mp3’ is the intended song to play.
Everything seems right to me, but I need help as to why this is not working

I have placed the ‘Instrumental1.mp3’ song referenced above, in the ‘Site Folder’ in the website folder hierarchy.
As one has to import the graphics files in Freeway express, in order to use them, I would expect that I should have to ‘import’ the songs that I want to appear on my website. I am not sure if I need to actually import the mp3s that I intend to use on my website, but it does seem to me that Freeway Express needs to be aware of the mp3s that I intend to use.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jeffrey

This may be where your problem lies.

FW controls the content of the site folder and isn’t happy if you stick stuff in there without telling it - and certainly will NOT upload it to the server at publish time.

If you need to add content then use an action like Upload Extra Resources Upload Extra Resources - ActionsForge

This action will allow you to choose files and put them in your site folder for you (and subsequently the server). These files can be set to go into the ‘Resources’ Folder or ‘With the HTML files’

Whichever place you decide for them you will have to ensure that the path to the file is correctly referenced in the FW doc.

In your example a href=”Instrumental1.mp3" the file Instrumental1.mp3 should be placed ‘With the HTML files’ for the page that you are using the media player on.

So the action should be applied to an item on the page where the media player is (I think it is an Item action)

But ultimately it will be easier for us to diagnose a problem if your page is on line somewhere.

And as an aside - if you want to display code on the Web version of FWT then start a new line with 4 Tildes

Followed by a Return
Your code My Favorite Tune
A return
4 more Tildes - and another return

Hi Jeffrey,
Try the Yahoo Media Player Action which will work in both Freeway Pro and Express;
http://www.freewayactions.com/test/yahoo-media-player/

  1. Add the action to your page using Insert > Action Item… > Yahoo Media Player menu item
  2. Open the Actions palette using Window > Actions
  3. Select Add media > file and select the mp3 you want to play using the Media file control
  4. Add the link text and any tooltip (title) text
  5. You can also choose to add album art which will show up on the player window
  6. Publish and upload your site (this is important as the player will only work when running on your server)
  7. When you click on the link text (step 4) in the web page the music should play

Regards,
Tim.

Tim,
Thanks very much for your response. I am not ready to upload and publish my website at this time, so I’ll have to wait for the results of your tip that you have provided. I have an account and a domain with GoDaddy hosting service, but I will have to research how to upload and publish a website without other people being able to see it. I wouldn’t want someone to see unfinished business while I am building my website. Maybe you have an idea.

I do have a question about the Yahoo! Media Player Action. I tried to add more than one song to a page using the method that you described, but only one of the songs on the page actually uses the Yahoo! Media Player (of course it doesn’t actually play when I click on the song, but it does activate the media player at the bottom of the page as expected. When I click on the second song, it changes the current page in the browser to a blank page with a media player (Not the Yahoo! Media Player) that is right smack in the middle of the page. There is nothing else on the page. If I click on the play button, the song does start playing, but it is not playing in the Yahoo! Media Player. Is the Yahoo! Media Player action limited to one song per page?

Thanks again for your response,

Jeffrey Watkins

If you FTP into your GoDaddy account and manually create a folder (directory) called ‘testbed’ (for example) you can then tell Freeway to upload into this test folder. Unless someone knows that the folder exists you should be the only one that knows it is there. I promise i won’t tell anyone!

You need to add a new instance of the action for every sound file you want to play (step 3 in my previous list);

  1. Select Add media > file and select the mp3 you want to play using the Media file control

Try and set up a working folder on your server and if you experience any problems with the Action post the URL here and I’ll take a closer look.

Tim.

Tim,
Thanks so much for your support. I have set up a working website with my web hosting company. The Yahoo Media Player works perfectly on the first song posted, however the second song will not play in the Yahoo Media Player. Can you help? My website URL is www.TheRhythmator.com. Remember, this is just a test website utilizing the Freeway Express tutorial.

Thanks again for your help.

Tim,
My wife solved the problem! Using a ‘shortcut’ type of mentality, I was using the same exact song in both occurrences of the Yahoo Media Player Action. It seems that the Yahoo Media Player is smart enough to know that I was using two identical songs in my test. As soon as I changed the second Yahoo Media Player instance to a different song, everything worked fine. If you have time, check out my song. It’s the first one. Just from an artistic perspective. The second song is a Sting song.

Thanks,

Jeffrey

Hi Jeffrey,
I’m glad you got this up and running. It looks like it is coming together nicely. You may want to consider adding the names of the tracks and any artwork to the tracks so they appear in the Yahoo player interface.
Regards,
Tim.

I want to change the font used in the title of the song to Arial. Is there an easy way to change this? I have the Media Player in a table cell, and I cannot figure out how to change it. When selecting the cells, the font and size is blank in the inspector and it will not allow a change. Thanks for any info…
