[Express] Navigation links back-forth-up 1 level

Hi

I am trying Freeway Express to build a new version of my simple little web site, a photo gallery in a hierarchical folder structure, and a Welcome page. Each full size image is to have its own page.

Now, (how) can I make navigation buttons with links that
1- loop the pages on the same level - preferably without specifying the file names, so that I just could put these links on the master page
a-forward b-backward c-go up one level. The Freeway Reference shows how to to the latter html, but you need to specify the starting document.
3-Prefereably make these links so that they will also work using the back, forth and up arrow keys on the keyboard.

Thank you for your help.
Hening.

There is an action called Link to Page that can do this and which can be applied to a Graphic item but as you are an Express user I am not sure if it is an option for you.

http://actionsforge.com/projects/view/81-link-to-page

But I suspect that getting these to work with the back, forth and up arrow keys on the keyboard is a different story altogether.

Hi David

thank you for your fast reply.

I have downloaded the Link to New Page action and installed it dragging the icon over the Freeway app icon in the Dock.

I have a Dock icon of the disk on which the OS (10.6.8) and my user account reside, displayed as folder.

If I try to see the installed action, left-clicking this disk icon and navigating to the folder Home/Library/App.Support/Freeway Express/Actions using the fly-out menu structure of the Mac, the Actions folder is shown empty.

If however i right-click the disk icon and choose Options/Show in Finder, then navigate to the Actions folder, the action is there!

But obviously, the Freeway app can not see the action either - it does not appear in the drop down menu of the Action tool in the tool bar, nor in the Insert/Action Item menu.

??

Talking about actions:
The Reference identifies 4 types of actions: Item, Page, Folder and Free-standing. The Edit/Actions menu shows a 5th one: Object. How is this defined, eg. versus Item?

Kind regards - Hening.

This action is an Item action - in other words you have to select an item (graphic in this case) and then apply the action using Item>Actions>Link to Page

The blurb at actionsforge is not specific about whether this action does actually work in Express though.

Yes I am aware of this, but it does not work. The action does not show in the menus. Also, the ambiguous behavior in the Finder seems to show that there is something wrong with the installation. But I repeated it, and no difference
.

Well according to the download page it should. Under the link there are 5 icons including 5E.

Sorry Hening - I don’t have Express to confirm that.

Actions can be stored in several places ie user/Library/Application Support/Freeway/Actions/General

and also - and this is my preferred place because then the action is available to all users

HD/Library/Application Support/Freeway/Actions/General

So look in both.

So look in both.

I had done this before my 1st post, and in HD/… I could not see the files either way, whereas in user/… I could see them in the Finder as described in one way, but not the other.

Now I have manually moved the actions (there are 2, Link_to_Page and Image_Caption) to HD/Lib/App.Support/FWE/Actions/General, and now, I can see them in the Finder either way, i.e. both the “normal” way and via the fly-out menu structure starting from the Dock icon of the HD. But Freeway still can not see them.

Mystery solved.

The action is an item action, and it is displayed in the Item/Actions menu if an item is selected! - not in the Actions tool dropdown menu. Uff!

Have not yet tested if it can do what I want.

I wrote that in my second post on this subject! Must have been lost in translation.

Yes you wrote that it can be applied to a graphic item, but I was not aware of that this meant it would not display in the menu from the Actions tool. Nor that an item has to be selected to make the action visible.
Anyway, now it’s in the box…

The question I have left is the one about the difference between items and objects, the latter term being used in the Edit/Actions menu.

Yes you wrote that it can be applied to a graphic item

What I wrote was

This action is an Item action - in other words you have to select an item (graphic in this case) and then apply the action using Item>Actions>Link to Page

An Item action is one that has to be applied to a specific item ie the item has to be selected first. Some Item actions work on Graphic items some on HTML items and some on either/both.

An Object action is one that creates an Object on your FW page and is created by using the Insert>Action Item method.

A Page action is applied to the Page and is added using the Page>Page Actions menu

Similarly a Folder action is applied to a Folder after you have selected it from the Site Pane using Page>Folder Actions.

Some actions can be added in several ways ie the PHP Feedback Form action can be applied as a Page action or as an Item action.

Indeed - sorry I did not remember this.

An Object action is one that creates an Object on your FW page and is created by using the Insert>Action Item method.

Thank you. This was the definition I could not find elsewhere.

Now I have installed the Link to Page action and attached it to a graphic item. On the page, the item shows a mark at the top, and in the site panel, the item icon shows the sprocket. But when I select the item, there is no Action palette in the Inspector, just one for the graphic item.

What is it I have overlooked? Or does this mean the action does not work with FWE 5, even though the download page claims it?

I have tried both to attach the action to an item on a master page and on a single page, with same result.

And in case it does not work, how can I remove the action from the item? --I found that by coincidence: un-mark “Combined Graphics” in the Inspector of the graphic item.

This looks to become a lengthy process…

There’s a separate window called the Actions palette. You can find it in your Window menu.

How do you remove an action from an item? Without deleting the item? Un-marking ‘combine graphics’ in the Inspector does not work this time. Searching the Reference and the KnowledgeBase returns nothing.

If you have applied an Action to an item, the Action interface will show up in the Actions palette whenever that item is selected in the design view. If you mouse over the tab associated with that Action, you will see a little (x) in the tab. Click that, and your Action is removed.

You can also “double-apply” the Action with the menu. Let’s say you have Rollover applied to a graphic box. If you pull down the Item / Actions menu, you’ll see a check mark next to Rollover in the menu list. If you apply Rollover a second time to that same element, you will un-set it. This is basic to how these types of menus work in Mac OS.

Hm, it does not seem to work for me. When I mouse over the tab of the action i the action palette, nothing happens, no x in the tab.
And the Item/Actions menu is dimmed…

Do you have the item selected in the design view? The Item menu only comes to life when you have an item selected (8 handles showing on corners and sides). If you have clicked on the page (so nothing at all is selected) the Page menu will be active.
