[Express] Problem with upload

You shouldn’t delete anything in your site folder and then upload or synchronize that folder with your server. But you can delete everything in the site folder, publish again (to get a fresh copy of everything you need) and then upload. If Freeway puts a file in your site folder, that’s because it needs that file. Freeway is generally very aggressive about reducing duplication, and won’t give you two identical copies of anything. If they share a name, but have a unique suffix like 1 or 1a, then they are fundamentally different in some way.

I think this question is related to this thread. When I look at my site folder, I have lots of files that are obviously versions of existing files. Can I delete the extraneous files, and if so, which ones should stay, without messing up my website? I assume that the (filename)a.ext, (filename)b.ext are redundant and can be deleted, but just want to be sure before I do so.

thanks!

If you want a clean out then you are better to select/create a new Site folder to publish into.

File>Document Setup and then half way down (under the Document Tab) you will find a Select button which you can use to navigate through the Finder to a new Site Folder that you have created or just make one in the dialogue box.

It is a good idea to create the new site folder ie mydocumentsitefolder2 inside your FW project folder but NOT inside any previous Site Folder.

You should not manually edit the contents of your site folder as FW will do this for you (unless you really know what you are doing).

Once you have created the new site folder and Published into it then you can happily trash the old site folder and its contents.

There is another method - which may be considered easier.

In the File Menu hold down the Ctrl Key while selecting File.

File>Publish Site will turn into File>Publish Everything

What this does is republishes all the html, graphics etc. used in your site into your site folder - it doesn’t just check what has changed since the last time. It just does them all.

Hi banditress,

Maybe I am not reading your question correctly, I do understand the answers you have gotten from DDave and Walter, but this reminds me of some exploration with my disorganized site.

I figured that since the media was ‘copied’ to the publish folder by freeway (neat - there it is!), I didn’t need the other clutter anymore. Some of those deleted items came up with ‘file not found/using copy’ every time I changed/published the page (different than uploading).

I also found out that I can’t throw out the ‘extra/done–with/used’ media I used in the website, because even though the item is in with all the other items/files for the site, freeway looks for the original every time you publish the page (as was explained by Walter or Dave at some point).

Long story longer but more to the point, make a file system of HD > user> Mywebsite > Media –Art/photos–Stuff–CurrentFreewayFolder >(site name)folders.

IF you need to find or change the original item that your site is using, go to the Edit menu and choose ‘Resources’. Best to try it than try to explain it _when in doubt CANCEL!

Just occurred to me, if your talking about stuff that accumulates on the server from previous uploads, I found the price of Transmit (even the demo version) great in ‘synching’ (WITH great care and caution) the current published files with the uploaded ones – you can do this in-between freeway uploads without a problem (I haven’t had one).

If this has nothing to do with your issue, I hope I didn’t waste your time. It was really good for me to put it into words though…

Oh, last tip. I usually await a blessing from those gurus we all know and respect before I do any new tasking…

Have a great Martin Luther King Memorial weekend.
