[Express] resizing graphic items?

Hello all,

I seem to have hit a bit of a glitch. I’ve been uploading photographs onto my website and as they are all mostly the same size I duplicated the frames. I imported the photos, went to . All’s well because if the frame I made was a tad too large I could just push the boarders in a nudge.

Except now I can’t. It just moves the whole thing. Where am I going wrong? I did a whole load of galleries with no problem but now I can’t do this.

I’m on a mac running 10.6.8 and I have freeway express 5.6.4.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

Liz

I am not aware that you could ever just nudge a border rather than the frame itself - you cant in Pro!

Borders/sides have to be dragged to move them independently.

You do have the option with the container selected of Item>Fit Box to Content

heh, well ‘nudging’ is not really the right word. It’s more making the box ‘live’ so there are the grey squares at the sides (I apologise for the lack of technical language but I’m a total amateur!). Usually I can resize that way, but lately it lets me do one or two and then I get to the third and it just won’t work. It drags the whole picture.

Because the website has a lot of photos, the photo file sizes are quite small so it doesn’t take forever to load up, so the option of fitting box to content would result in postage stamp sized images. I think it must be a glitch in the software.

OK, I’m bumping this again because resizing by changing the number of pixels in the inspector box is doing my head in!

On the other website I made the drag to re-size facility works perfectly. I click on the image and the compass symbol appears so I can drag the image around in it, but on the other website, I get no compass symbol and I can’t drag say the left hand border inwards. All I can do is move the whole thing as it is around the page.

So it ends up looking like this.

The first two images worked ok, but get to number three and I can’t do anything. Even now I can change the size of the first couple of graphic boxes by dragging the border in or out. Is it because I have too many images on one page?

so the option of fitting box to content would result in postage stamp sized images.

In your table layout are you clicking inside a table cell and then using Insert>Graphic Item? This gives you a 100px square graphic container.

With this Graphic container selected then File>Import (Cmd+E).

The next step depends on whether you have sized your images in Pshop or similar to the size you want to display them on your page ie 460px x 680px at 72ppi (jpeg) (I note that some of your photos are Gif which is not the best choice for continuous tone images)

If they are resized already then Item>Fit Box to Content is your last step (Shift+Cmd+D)

If not ie you are importing a hi-res image and you have the Ignore Resolution option checked in the Import dialogue box you will likely end up with a much larger image and have to resize your container manually.

Hi Dave (or anyone!)

This is a bit long because I’ve typed as I’ve tried out various permutations.

The photos are scanned as Tiffs and then resized to JPEG and watermarked. In the themed folders we kept them in, they are all Jpegs, not gifs. I don’t understand why the images are now Gifs.

We originally had quite large files, but it made the page slow to load (this was when we were using iWeb). Also someone pointed out that the file sizes were so big, people would be able to make high resolution digital images just by yanking them off the web. So they are now mostly much smaller. The thing is, is that because they are hand printed, they are all slightly different sizes, so I can’t really make it all one fixed size. Please bear in mind that I know absolutely eff all about digital graphics and to compound my frustrations I have dyscalculia so the whole file size and resizing thing is really really difficult for me to get my head around.

Anyway, what I do is make duplicate graphic fields of the most common proportions for that gallery. I import with Cmd+E and the do ctrl/click to get the graphics menu up and I chose ‘scale and pad’. Then I either drag the sides or top/bottom in if necessary. This worked fine for a number of galleries and images, but I got to the later ones and no joy after the first 3 or 4.

I made a couple of test pages using different sized files, from different time periods and in different orders, but it’s all the same. I get to image 3 or 4 and I can’t do a manual drag to resize, no matter what kind of file or when it was created.

And here’s a weird thing. The first upload of the site, where the borders were too big, I got white on either size of the photograph, but now I don’t. Look at this:

This is the original gallery page:
http://matthew-ellis-photography.com/matthewellisfinl.html

You can see from the 4th image on that I couldn’t resize and so get the white boarders.

OK, now here’s the duplicate page.
http://matthew-ellis-photography.com/u3.html

The ONLY change is that I swapped the first two images with the 5th and 6th, but look, no white borders! Anywhere! If this had happened the first time, I wouldn’t have cared. Seriously, this is odd, surely? It can’t just be down to me being crap at this kind of stuff if that happened.

So, are my only options to duplicate all the pages or should I carry on manually resizing using the HxW pixel field in the inspector window.

Or maybe someone from freeway might see that there is a bit of a glitch and fix it?

Well done anyone who bothered to read all that!

Try selecting your graphic containers and make sure that the background colour to them is set to none.
