[Express] Secret Page

I’m starting on a site Wednesday, all straight forward… customer wants a page that ONLY himself knows about. He has a telecoms business in Bloemfontein.

All he wants it for, is at times when he doesn’t have his software with him, he can go to the “secret page”, login or just use a password, just to download the software from any computer he uses on site sometimes.

Thank You

This is best set up server side where using your hosting Cpanel - or similar - you can set up a password protected directory (folder)

This is how it looks on my server http://www.deltadzine.net/cpanel.html

In FW make a sub folder in your site with an obscure name eg 123xyz

Create your secret page within that folder and upload your site.

Once the folder is uploaded to the server then you can use the PPD feature to give username and password access to that folder.

To add to what Dave suggests, I would avoid doing any sort of “security through obscurity” if you can avoid it. Using a crazy folder name or a crazy page name will not keep Google from finding it. All it takes is for you to navigate from that crazy page to a known and crawled page, and Google will get you through the referrer tag. Using the cPanel to set a password is a completely simple and bulletproof way to accomplish your client’s goal.

Thx Guys, I’m only starting tomorrow, so I’ll give it a go and test it. Should be straight forward from what you guys wrote.

Straightforward if your Hosting provider offers the facility.
