[Express] Upgrade to Pro?

I am definitely an amateur but managed to get quite a good Site with Express 5.5. I have been using it for two years now and am very happy with it. However I have received an offer to upgrade to Pro 6 for half price. The function of installing a search engine of the site that Pro offers is very interesting. I understand there are tons of actions in 6 Pro as well, but I am not sure if I would really need these (although they are nice of course) I am a bit worried that after upgrading my old Site will not function properly and since I know virtually nothing about the technical aspect, I am very skeptical to upgrade, since I cannot afford days or even weeks to figure out how to get everything working properly. Any thoughts?
Thanks

Hi Dust,

You shouldn’t have any issues at all in upgrading from Express to Pro, the only difference is that the interface is slightly different in Pro (more options) but the site itself will function in exactly the same way. I would recommend making a backup of the Express file though because, once opened and saved in Pro, you can’t reopen it in Express.

I hope this helps,

Joe

Hi Joe
Thanks for your response.
Just a (dumb) question. I imagine I could download Pro in a different folder, so I keep Freeway 5.5 running as well. That way I can keep up my current Website while I take my town to explore the Pro version. Or does this cause conflicts?
Kind regards
Dust

The applications will happily run side-by-side. They don’t share anything.

Pro is a “yes, and…” version of Express. The interface is very similar, with lots of additional controls (and the ability to load and use third-party Actions, including those you write yourself).

If you want to try it out, there is a 30-day trial version, which is the full and un-hobbled application set to run for only 30 days. Open your Express site in the trial version of Pro. Freeway Pro will make a backup of the Express file (since this is a fork in the road) and you won’t lose the ability to open that site in Express later. Any experiments you do in Pro will be lost when you go back, but there’s no real issue with that, since you’re exploring, right?

Just one last question. I have a Dutch version. Will it cause conflicts to upgrade to an English Pro version?

There really is only one version of Pro and one of Express. It is localized into many different languages, but that’s done inside the application itself. If you were to go into your System Preferences and change the default language on your Mac, you would see the entire application change before your eyes. I’m not aware of any way to change the language of Pro independent of Express – it’s all to do with how your Mac is configured, at the system level. They would switch together, at the same time.

Freeway will only create a backup file of this nature when opening a document in a more recent major version (e.g. opening a 5.5 document in 6). This does not happen when opening an Express document in Pro - there is a warning to this effect when you open the Express document for the first time.

Long story short - make sure you keep your own backup if you are going to be experimenting with your live site!
