External HD won't let me copy to it

Hello,
I use an external HD for my iTunes library and all has been working fine. This morning I was ripping off some CDs of mine and importing, no problem, and then all of a sudden I try the next one and get the message:

“Attempting to copy to the disc 2TB MUSIC failed. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation.”

Nothing’s been changed and the privileges are set as follows:

Me: Read & Write,
Everyone: Read & Write (the middle option of the three just says ‘fetching’ the whole time, but the privilege says Read & Write)

and “ignore ownership on this volume” is unchecked.

I’m the only user on this mac.

thanks
Trev

It gets curiouser and curiouser.

Some files are adding fine and others aren’t. Basically I’m backing up my CD collection and all are being ripped the same way through iTunes - some it likes, some it doesn’t, and even when I use a different ripper the same files refuse to be copied.

Any ideas?
Trev

I hate this ‘feature’ of Lion. My computer and software cost a bundle and having the microsoft esk dialogues telling me I can or can’t do something unless I allow it…. don’t have ‘permission’ … I can’t see any good in it.

This has created much work in the way I have my comp. set up, I have to re apply (get info at the bottom add permissions) permissions on files that worked just fine. Sometimes you can apply to the folders and use the gear to apply permission to enclosed items. DO NOT try this with system files or the Library in general - I found out the hard way.

Note: years ago someone told me Apple recommends setting up a generic user incase the permissions / the main profile were damaged on your OS. Then you could still get the OS started from it and fix the permissions / bug. I for some reason did that and used the ‘generic’ for all these years, and the OS see me as a secondary user and not the primary. All my downloads and Apps and work is done under the secondary profile, not sure how to get it to primary, but the point is this privileges / permissions keep getting in the way now with LION… What if I was my employee and my boss is not available - out of luck result of age old maintenance advice that I think was pretty standard. Apple just overlooked them/us?

I presume you have a Time Machine backup or a recent clone backup. If so try the following.

Is your secondary user an Admin? If not make him one and reboot your Mac.

Now from secondary user run Disk Utility and repair permissions.

Hi Dale, so I suppose in my case (adding mp3s to the external drive) do the same, starting up from a clone?
