Filename updated limit not working on pictures

I published my site and was really happy with it until it realized that my file names on all my pictures had been shortened. I looked it up and people said in one of the chats it was the document limitation of 21 characters. So I went to document set up- changed The limit so it was higher and what I needed (115 just to be safe) and re-uploaded the website… The picture names still stayed cut off…some with a number at the end. Freeway pro shortened and changed my file names.

So I completely took down my site and then re- uploaded it again so I could change all the files…: nothing changed.
When working in freeway pro the full title is still there on every picture but when it is published and you click ‘save as…’ The file name has the original limitation - cut off.

Is there a way to fix this? My boss is very annoyed that the file names are cut off… He wants the search terms.

Thank you so much for anyones help!

For Boss I am reading Father in your case

Unfortunately if you change the filename limit after the image has been imported then the extra characters have already been lost. You will need to re-import each image to regain the lost characters.

Note that if you are doing this for extreme SEO reasons then you will have to add back in any _ underscore or - hyphens you have used in the file name as FW may strip them out. Please dont use any other characters in file names.

Thank you so much DeltaDave!
Ha-yes- boss equals father! He still was quite annoyed.

I will re-upload the pictures. I was thinking of doing that anyway but making them ‘pass though’ for a mobil version of the site. Is their a character limit on passthrough images?
This is all about SEO reasons. I can still use _underscore and _hyphens and words right? You mean don’t use strange characters like ^%&*@# right? Why would FW strip them out?
Thank you for your advice!

No as FW doesn’t alter pass-throughs in any way

Sure but FW will strip out underscores and hyphens in the file name on non pass through images

You mean don’t use strange characters like ^%&*@# right?

Absolutely! These characters are illegal in browser terms and can trip up Browsers and OS

As you probably know already FW will create automatic Alt tags but will remove any of those characters when it does it whether a pass through or not.

But as far as SEO goes the image file name carries far less weight than a good descriptive alt text. That is unless you are optimising specifically for image search - which you aren’t.

It is your site/pages you want found and not your images.

Hello DeltaDave,
You are being so helpful! Thank you. I wanted to double check I’m doing everything right.
I am re-uploading all of my images as pass-throughs.

I AM doing all this for optimizing specifically for image searches. Am I doing something wrong? How do I optimize for image searches? Our rings are very unique and we get a lot of business through image searches.

What is Alt Text? I found a box in the inspector in the ‘item output settings’ - its the same as my title. That should be clicked right?

Should the Alt text be written more like a sentence? Or words-connected-by-hyphens.

Pass throughs are good for the website right? For search engine and image placement?

Thank you for answering all my questions. You’re the best!

Treat it as if you were describing the picture to a blind person.

Not relevant. The point about a pass through image is that FW will not alter/shorten the file name. So make the file name how you want it to be searched for.
