Final Step

After almost a year, I finally have my Freeway site complete. Now to upload. My question is, I have had a web site done in Frontpage for many years. I would think it best to delete all my old Frontpage files, via FTP, before I move my Freeway files over. I’m just not sure what files to delete, all? Certainly I know the HTM files, graphic files etc. but there are other folders there that I have no idea what they are OR is it as simple as deleting everything inside the HTDOCS folder and then moving my Freeway files over?

Unrelated question, is there a way to view all my older post on this site?

If you click on your name in the header of any post, you will go to your “person” page, and you can see a list of links to the lists you are subscribed to. Click on the link after the number of posts, and the Sphinx search engine will gather all of your posts in a single page.

As long as you don’t erase any hidden files (they usually begin with a dot, and your FTP application will hide them from you unless you have enabled the preference to show hidden files) then you should be fine deleting everything. Unless you are really short on disk space, what I would do is make a new folder in the htdocs folder called backup, and move everything into that, rather than delete.

I will second that! Plus I would leave any files that you are not 100% sure that you know what they are. Some systems do require some specially named files in there so if you are not sure then ask.

Well, not to my surprise this isn’t going easy. On my mac I have yet to figure out how to create a folder inside the htdocs folder. My provider had a very nice FTP app I was using on my PC but it doesn’t work on a mac. I tried “Yummy FTP” but couldn’t even get it to work. I then used Filezilla and connected justs fine but still could not find how to create the folder for the old site. Assuming I get that part figured out, my real question is, do I copy the folder “site folder” that was created by Freeway over to the HTdocs folder or just the contents of that folder?

You copy the contents of that folder. Your default homepage should be named index.html (filename, not title) and it should live directly inside the htdocs folder, not nested in another folder within that.

Once you have your old site moved or removed, you should definitely get the settings correct in Freeway’s Upload dialog, as that will a lot easier long-term for you. Freeway uploads over FTP or SFTP, and it’s a smart incremental upload – only the changed files are uploaded, and any files removed within Freeway will be deleted from the server.

Walt, that’s exactly what I thought. I will use the “upload” in Freeway after I get the old site moved and all the Freeway files uploaded. Just installed CyberDuck. Seems much clearer. I was expecting to see a split window like the others apps I tried but I think with this I just drag from a finder window. I think, got to look at it some more. At least with Cyberduck there is a clear way to create a folder, rename etc…

You may like Transmit better than any of the free FTP apps. There’s a 30-day trial so you can make up your mind. It’s a very deep and powerful application, and it’s kept up with me as I’ve grown as a Web developer. It’s not free, but it’s not onerously expensive, either.

A big 2nd vote for Transmit - well worth the money - it will repay you many times over.

Of all the ones I tried, Transmit worked fantastic. Love it!
Everything went very smooth. The old site is in a folder, just in case, but doesn’t look like I’ll need it. The new site just finished uploading and short of a few tweaks, I’m very pleased. I started this, in my spare time, almost a year ago. After years and years of a PC and Frontpage this was pretty foreign to me. I’ve told many people that I chose Freeway, not only because it is a quality product BUT because of this forum. There is no other like it. I can’t put a price on the help I have received. Thanks to everyone…Roger
