Working with the FW trial version on my first web site ever, how cool is that! My site I am attempting to put together will be an informational site with 4 tabs on the menu bar. I have been using the default page size for a FW document 550 x 700 or is it 700 x 550? confused? i always assumed it was H regarded first, but saw another post that had it written the first way. Anyhow I have come across numerous posts mentioning that 800 x 600 is a pretty standard page size, so would that mean 800h x 600w. Also, when someone is using there browser does it automatically shrink or enlarge to your page size. Might seem like an obvious question but this being my first site i was looking in the “preview in browser” under the FW file menu, and it shows a lot of extra space around the page. Thanks…So many questions, its a bit overwhelming but having a lot of fun. This forum has been super helpful. Thanks a lot!!

. The document size is usually presented the same way as monitor
resolutions - Width x Height. (It is the opposite of the press
convention, which is H x W).
Also, when someone is using their browser does it automatically
shrink or enlarge to your page size.
A web site can be made to grow and shrink with the browser, but this
is not automatic and requires some expertise and understanding. I
suggest you keep to a fixed space for your first site and work within
this. (You are not constrained to the default sizes, you can choose
you own). Set the Page Align to ‘Center’ in the inspector to keep an
even border on either side. Once you are confident with basics of
Freeway - which won’t take long - you can learn how to make a
‘flexible’ layout.
Also bear in mind that HTML content may push boxes downwards and your
site will then grow beyond the provisional height you have set when
published and displayed in a browser. This is normal, especially when
viewed on a PC.

I’m surprised Freeway still has 550 wide as a default as I can’t think
anyone would choose that size today for a normal web site. As Colin
says, it is possible to design a flexible width but for fixed widths
950 to 1000 pixels is more common, e.g. The Guardian (940), Apple
(980), Softpress (935), Google’s Current (985), New York Times (970),
Independent (970), The Onion (960) and eBay (900). As regards height,
people are used to scrolling down now so I’d make it as long as you
think appropriate for the content but make sure the main information is
in, say, the top 800 pixels. As always, though, design for your
intended audience.
I agree - it makes Softpress seem out of touch to have this default - in my
opinion. And then the actual fit size for a no side scrolling 800 would be
750 or 760 and they offer 800. I can only think that it doesn’t get given
any priority of attention and just continues as was.

After lots of testing in many browsers, both Mac and PC, the actual size for no horizontal scrolling is (total width -21), therefore if designing for 800 > 779 or 1024 > 1003px. The allowance of 21 px is for the side scrollbar.

I haven’t done such work so thank you - but do not many popular browsers
also add sidebars that decrease available browser window.
I know I got 760 from somewhere with a reason behind it but cant recall
exactly what that was.
all the best

And if you want to be pedantic, then you should include a half-dozen
more pixels for the inevitable history palette, collapsed.
